In Latin class today, we:
-- worked on subjects, direct objects, etc. with the opening sentences
-- reviewed the homework which was p.17 Word Work. This was checked for a grade.
-- discussed the kinds of inferences we can draw from uncovering ancient houses in Pompeii:
1. We can say it was hot because there were thick stone walls and small windows to the outside hot street and large openings to the inside gardens shaded by trees
2. We can say there were very few trees because the houses were of stone and brick.
3. We can say there was trade with Greece and other parts of Italy because wealthy houses had marble in them.
4. We can say the climate was quite dry because there were ways to collect rainwater (the impluvium and piscina). The climate is called Mediterranean grasslands.
5. We can say the public impression of the houses mattered greatly because people (clients) entered the impressive atrium and went through to the tablinum -- the family rooms (the bedrooms etc.) were very small and the public spaces large.
