Community Outreach
12 Are you interested in performing off-campus volunteer community service during school hours? Community Outreach students will provide approximately 30-40 hours of off-campus service as an integral part of the course. This service-learning course focuses on volunteering which creates authentic occupational experiences in group and communication skills. Students will work together to improve the community and provide aid to charities through class projects. The class requires four days of individual service and one in-class seminar per week. Students have the opportunity to select their own service sites. Examples of service sites have included animal shelters, Early Child Family Education, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and elementary, junior and senior high schools. This engaging and rigorous two trimester course introduces students to the teaching profession. The following four themes are explored: Exploring the Learner Exploring the Classroom Exploring Education Exploring the Profession Students will complete a student teaching practicum after completing one trimester of instruction.
