Ancient and Modern Philosophy
We don't have the philosopher's stone, but a thousand of their thoughts. Works to be compared in Latin and English, and French if it pleases.
Antique Books
"Before video games we had books." Princess Bride
A lot of stories never made it from books to computers, we'll look at them.
Libra Historica
Argitatorum nil refert verba technica. ACL ACTFL Paperless Test, Good Thing?
Teaching Materials
Latin must be spoken, read, heard, and written to be a living, classical language. "Why you ask?" Catullus 85. The human language device works on two types of simple memory and a third complex one, first the auditory and visual memory, and then the episodic memory. This last one is vivid and powerful for its ability to store stories. In this memory, the names of things and the ideas of things come together in a single language, in this case Latin.
Students who can understand the subject matter and words of such stories can be said to understand Latin. Fancy talk of grammarians can wait. ACL ACTFL Paperless Test, Good Thing?
