"In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you."
Mortimer Adler

This course is a structured reading class for seventh and eighth graders. We focus on reading comprehension, vocabulary enhancement, and several other aspects crucial to improve reading skills. The students in these classes will be tested by the state of Mississippi with the MCT2. As a parent of two children myself, I encourage you to view the Mississippi Department of Education's website to see the Item Specifications for Language Arts 7th and 8th grades. With the high stakes testing that our children are facing before graduation, it is imperative that our children master these skills early on.

This course is for any senior interested in preparing himself or herself for college level reading and writing. The literature covered in this course spans over many decades and many topics. We read one novel per nine weeks, which include the following: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, and finally teacher's choice. These novels are subject to change depending on what is in the best interest of the class.

During the course of the ninth grade English class, English I, we will read many different types of literature. The students will be preparing for the English II Mulitple Choice State Test and the English II Writing State Test. The students entering into the 9th grade during the 2008-2009 school year will be required to write an essay in which they respond to a piece of literature. As a ninth grade teacher, I will prepare these students for this challenge. They have been taught the basic writing elements, and I will teach the steps to developing those paragraphs into an essay. The reading covered during this class will encompass poetry, short stories, excerpts from novels, plays, and much more. I encourage you to view the Mississippi Department of Education's website at mde.k12.ms.us and view the Item Specifications for English II. These Item Specs provide a great example of the type of questions these children will face as tenth graders. ALL STUDENTS MUST PASS THE ENGLISH II WRITING AND THE ENGLISH II MULTIPLE CHOICE TESTS IN ORDER TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL. EVEN IF THE CHILD PASSES ALL OF HIS OR HER CLASSES AT THIS SCHOOL, SHE WILL NOT GRADUATE WITHOUT PASSING THIS TEST. That is why, as a parent and a teacher, I view this ninth grade year of English as important. WE are building foundations for success on these state tests.

This course involves writing in depth essays, research papers, and writing sentences with varied structures. The literature covered in the class is mainly from Britian and dates back to 1100 AD. We study classic literature and any literature relevant to the classic literature. These students are exposed to college level literature; however, the AP Lit class offered at Myrtle is recommended to any student planning to attend college.
