Honors American Literature Message Board
Honors American literature offers an in-depth look at how American literature has evolved along with the nation itself. The class involves reading both in and out of class, discussion, critical and personal writing, vocabulary quizzes, and two outside-class projects to be completed over the course of the semester.

Poets Research Project

You will be presenting a lesson on Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, or the Fireside Poets.

Your presentation must include the following things:

1. biographical information

2. dramatic readings of at least two works or excerpts

3. information about writing style and direct connection of the information to actual works or excerpts read

4. information that proves helpful in understanding purpose, style, and subject matter

5. a visual aid that is used during the presentation

6. significant participation by every member of the group

7. a written outline of the presentation including who is responsible for what

The organization of the presentation is up to the group. While one group might start with dramatic readings then explanation, another might find it more helpful to start with background, then readings. Your presentation should last approximately twenty minutes. The following will be considered in grading:

Native American Mythology

Students must turn in either a myth in the style of a children's book or a comparison/contrast of origin myths from two cultures. Students also read "Earth on Turtle's Back" and the excerpt from the Navajo Origin Legend. They answered for each story: What can we tell the tribes valued based on what they included in the stories?
American Dream Essay (homework)
Due Date: August 10, 2009
The essay compares and contrasts aspects of the American Dream over time. Students may use one of three comparison/contrast structures discussed in class. Final copies are due Monday, August 10th.
