Course Description: The goal of the Intensive Reading/Developmental Studies Course is to strengthen academically under prepared students in Reading through intensive instruction and tutorial assistance. As a consequence, students’ skills are improved and brought to grade level in related areas in hopes of mastering the necessary skills needed to successfully pass the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). This course is required for all freshmen and some sophomore students whose placement test results fall below the minimum requirement for enrolling in required courses in the core education curriculum. Students successfully completing this course will demonstrate: 1. The ability to read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fiction, narrative, nonfiction, and poetry through: -- Guided Reading Groups -- Literature Circles -- Silent Sustained Reading (SSR) -- Reading Aloud 2. Ability to read and learn the meanings of unfamiliar words and phrases. 3. Writing and speaking competence (standard English required) -- Oral Presentations -- Group Discussions 4. Ability to research by using various sources including newspapers, books, journals, and internet resources (computer literacy) 5. Ability to critically analyze literature and explain the symbolism. Required Supplemental Materials: • Pens, Pencils, Erasers, Highlighters • Paper • Notebook • Folders • Daily Planner/Agenda Book Class activities include: ➢ Students close textual readings of selected works that represent a variety of ethnic groups in American society across the curriculum. ➢ Participate in class and group discussions ➢ Participate in library and internet research ➢ Oral and visual presentations of creative research projects using technology/PowerPoint. Course Requirements: 1. Attendance is expected and is your responsibility. Attendance is an important factor when your class grade is determined. Excessive absences may result in a failing grade. Attendance includes punctuality, active participation in all class activities and discussions, and appropriate conduct in class. 2. The Code of Student Conduct will be enforced. Please refer to the Students handbook. 3. Students must be prepared with required class materials. 4. Assignments turned in late receive reduced and/or NO credit unless otherwise arranged. 5. Appropriate behavior is expected in class conducive to Miramar High School Rules and Student Code of Conduct. Listed below are consequences for inappropriate behavior: • Seat reassignment • Student Conference • Parent contact/parent conference • Detention • Administrative/Guidance Referral • Internal/External Suspension • Permanent Removal from class • Expulsion Instructional Methods: a) Lecture and discussion b) Small groups/cooperative learning/peer groups c) Study guides d) Modeling/Role Playing e) Assignment of internet research to develop technological expertise and intellectual depth f) Assignment of library research to reinforce critical thinking skills g) Video presentations h) “Round Table” discussion(s) on current events and various social issues. Evaluation: • Preparation of Portfolio • “Journal- Keeping”—reading related reflections • The ability to present all projects effectively while including technology (PowerPoint) and visual aids. • Class Participation • Group participation/cooperative learning • Behavior & Attendance • Classwork, Homework, Test, Quizzes, Midterm, and Final Exams • Individual/Group Research Projects as well as, various short Essay assignments GRADING SCALE: 100-90 =A 89-87 =B+ 86-80 =B 79-77 =C+ 76-70 =C 69-67 =D+ 66-60 =D 59 or below =F Incomplete =I **Individual conferences will be held with each student periodically to keep student informed of their academic standing in the course and to discuss any problems, issues, or concerns that may be interfering with the course work ** |
