Students will study the people and events that shaped our nation's history from the period of early European Exploration through Reconstruction. Primary and secondary resources such as biographies and autobiographies; novels; speeches, letters, and diaries will be used throughout the course. Alternative Texts such as poetry, music, video clips, video games, art, and photography will be used to encourage student engagement.

The Lotus Diagram Curriculum Map will be used as a guide to track student progress through the curriculum. Each Unit consists of eight full lessons followed by a Unit exam.


Class Supplies

An Interactive Notebook will be created using a Student Composition Book. This resource will be used to track Lesson Title, TAKS Terms, Vocabulary and Lesson Notes.

Colored folders will be kept inside the classroom to store student work and assessments.


US History Twitter
The US History Twitter will be used as a commumication tool regarding class information and Social Studies related topics. I highly recommend parents and students to register on Twitter and follow class updates.


Lesson Extension Homework Activity

Lesson extension activities are an important component of student learning and comprehension of content and skills. Completing outside activities allows time in the classroom to be served for deeper understanding and knowledge of concepts.

Homework assignments can be viewed by clicking on the Unit link. Homework assignments will need to be completed by the assigned due dates.


Make-Up Work

It is understood that students will need to be away from class from time to time. It is the responsibility of each student to obtain, complete and turn in missed classroom notes and assignments.

Unit 1: Exploration and Settlement
Begining with Native Americans and continuing through time, people from many cultures settled in the Americas. As people migrated to the continent, a new culture took root in North America.

Unit 2: Toward Independence
A spirit of independence became evident early in the history of the American people. Far from the established rules and restrictions they had faced in their home nations, the new settlers began to make their own laws and develop their own ways of doing things.

Unit 3: The American Revolution
Although the United States declared its Indpendence in 1776, no country recognized it as an independent nation at that time. It took a war and the efforts of American diplomats to win this recognition.

Unit 4: The U.S. Constitution/Bill of Rights
When the American colonies broke their political ties with Great Britain, they faced the task of forming an independent government. In 1788 the Consitition of the United States bacame the official plan of American government.



The first ten amendments of the Constitution place limits on government and empower the people with certain civil liberties and protections from government power.

Economic, social, and political events shaped foreign and domestic policy during the early years of the American republic.

Unit 6: Sectionalism
At a time that national spirit and pride were growing throughout the country, a strong sectional rivalry was also developing. Both North and South wanted to further their economic and political interests.

Unit 7: The Civil War
The Civil War, a war in which Americans fought other Americans, transformed the United States. African Americans gained freedom when slavery was abolished, but the war left a legacy of bitterness between the North and South.
