Before good readers read a new piece of literature they access what they already know about the themes or issues in the text. One way to do this is by completing an anticipation guide. In today's class, students completed an anticipation guide for the novel, SPEAK, by Laurie Halse Anderson. The reflected on generalizations that people make about issues that will be presented in the novel.

| In today's class students read and took notes on "The Circuit," by Francisco Jimenez. Students will be using this story as a basis for answering capt-style questions in the "six-step" format. Today's class discussion started off with students' thinking about how it feels to be new to a place (school. team, town). The main character in the story is a migrant farm worker from Mexico who experiences these feelings on a regular basis as his family is constantly moving from place to place to find and keep work. Students are to think about this story for homework and complete the notes page. |

Overcoming Challenges

| In today's class students shared certain challenges they had to overcome in their first week of school. Several students realized that with persistence and good problem-solving skills, they were able to learn their schedule, find their way around the school, get accustomed to waking up early and making a schedule for completing assignments.
