Biology
Science is the underlying theme of this course. It forms the basis on which class discussion will be centered. Science includes, and is included in, many facets of everyday life. The study of science can serve many purposes. It can be utilized especially when making decisions. Science incorporates logic and reason within a framework of methods. Learning the components of this framework will allow you to ask questions and answer them in a logical fashion. A firm grasp of science can lead to a fuller understanding of an issue and better ways of addressing (dealing with) that issue. Biology is the science of life and we will be exploring science related specifically to life throughout this course. Topics will include: the nature of science; chemistry of life; cells; genetics (biotechnology); human interaction with nature; and the diversity of life.
PLTW- Biomedical Innovations
Students design innovative solutions for the health challenges of the 21st century. They work through progressively challenging open-ended problems, addressing topics such as clinical medicine, physiology, biomedical engineering, and public health. They have the opportunity to work on an independent project with a mentor or advisor from a university, hospital, research institution, or the biomedical industry. Throughout the course, students are expected to present their work to an audience of STEM professionals.
