| When Loving Your Senior is Hard: A Letter to Parents |

Dear Parents:
I am not one to give advice on being a parent since my older child is only four. Through the last four yrs with Rachel and Collin, I have been blessed with love, hugs and times of real joy. I have also witnessed many falls, toilet seats stuck on heads, kids in the dryer, full boxes of cereal/chips poured on the floor, sleepless nights, tripping over toys, etc. I will begin this school yr with a broken arm that I got in Florida on our beach vacation after my daughter spilled juice and I fell in it.
With this said, I know that you have now raised your child for 17 yrs. Your stories are four times more than mine.
This yr will be trying for all of us. Your kids will be asking for money for senior pictures, caps, gowns, invitations, GAS, among other items. It will be an expensive yr. Also, you are going to have to deal with seniors who may or may not communicate all that they need, may or may not tell you about upcoming tests and papers. They may want to wait until the last minute to tell you about the SAT/ACT, failing grades, assignments, and college information. I have taught 1,300 kids in the last 10 yrs and will teach another 130 this yr. Nothing surprises me. I see the stresses on parents and teachers alike but I also see students who are on the edge of figuring out what they want to do with their lives and it can be very tense for them as well.
I ask you to sign up for this classjump page. Many of the teachers at the high school have sites. I also ask you to sign up for Parent Connect through the county's site at www.fannin.k12.ga.us
ParentConnect will allow you access to grades and upcoming assignments. Attendance and discipline actions are also recorded on this site.
I will work hard to make sure that classjump is updated.
Dr. Slagle, Mrs. Walker and I will work with the students to help with college information. Also, when we complete information for financial aid, Rebecca Hammond will be an imperative contact. She can be reached at rhammond@utk.edu or 706-492-2883.
Let us know what we can do to help and we will be glad to get any information for you.
Stick with those seniors. They will outgrow any craziness and be the people they should be. You will miss the toilet seats on their heads next yr as they enter college.
