Anatomy and Physiology
A deep and natural curiosity about the wonders of the human body make Anatomy and Physiology a fascinating course.

This semester we will delve into developing a deeper, conceptual understanding how our body parts are put together into systems and the dynamic nature of how these systems work and interact.

Addditionally, we will take a comparative anatomy approach by looking at body system development in other animals.

This will provide a comprehensive introduction to and foundation in Anatomy and Physiology that is useful for any one interested in animals, the artist wanting to better understand forms and particularly helpful for those interested in pursuing studies in
medical fields.

Welcome!
ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY

I AM ASKING YOU TO KEEP AN ORGANIZED NOTEBOOK FOR THIS CLASS
I WILL CHECK IT RANDOMALLY AND PERIODICALLY FOR A NOTEBOOK GRADE. (100 points-10 points each check)

Root Word list/Anatomy Terms (keep in front of notebook)

Units of Study: (This will be updated throughout the semester)

The Human Body, an Orientation-150 points
Regional Terms poster/practice (25 points)
Chapter 1 Study guide/Homeostasis/Nurse McDril-body systems (50 points)
Hello Mr. Jello/Fetal Pig –orientation and directional terms activity (25 points)
Reading-“Medical Imaging-Illuminating the body”-D.Y.R. (25 points)
Homeostatic Control Mechanisms-Positive and Negative Feedback
Body organization-atoms, molecules, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems
Stem Cell Reading (25 points)

Basic Chemistry- As with all unit packets-Keep in your notebook (we will refer to this chapter as the course proceeds, it is especially important for better understanding Physiology)

Introduction to Systems in Sync-for each system we study you will receive a diagram showing how the system relates to the other body systems. The assignment for these is to write a summary, in your own words, of the relationships. This is important in emphasizing how the body is a dynamic composite of independent parts. (200 points (20 points each-if we cover fewer than 10 systems this will be worth fewer points)

For some of the systems, such as the cardiovascular system, we will compare our system to that of other animals-through dissection and/or models

Immune System-Non-specific and specific responses 200 points
Blood typing activity (15 points)
Lymphatic System Packet (50 points)
Immune system notes/game (include case study) (100 points)
Immune System continued
Osmosis Jones-character notes/summary (15 points)
Systems in Sync paragraph (20 points)

Cardiovascular System (220 points)
Cardiovascular System-Overview- Notes/Diagrams
Calcium and Contraction-Physiology of Muscle contraction
Effects of Exercise on the Cardiovascular system/Blood Pressure (35 points)
Evoultion of Vertebrate Circulatory system activity (dissection? Or models) (25 points)
“Something the Lord Made” video/summary (25 points)
Cardiovascular System disorders project (100 points)
Reading/Article D.Y.R (15 points)

AP BIOLOGY CHALLENGE
If you are here-you know-We are going to CHALLENGE THAT TEST!-MAY 8th a.m. This will require a great deal of focus and commitment for the next few weeks. It will also require you to tackle EVERY task/lab, question set and practice essay I ask you to do-EVERY ONE! Additionally, it will require academic courage and tenacity from each of you. You have my absolute commitment and full support (which is HUGE), I need the same from each of you. I am also asking you support each other. This will be a challenge and will be worth it.
HERE WE GO!

Biology
Welcome. This is a continuation of a year long course is designed to develop a strong foundation in biology while fostering science literacy through inquiry, critical thinking.

The Biology Place website provides excellent tutorials of many of the concepts we will address.
http://www.phschool.com/science/biology_place/

Eight major themes that link the units and topics of Biology are greatly emphasized throughout the course. (These are also endorsed by the College Board)
1. Science as a Process 2. Relationship of Structure to Function
3. Evolution 4. Regulation
5. Energy Transfer 6.Interdependence in Nature
7. Continuity and Change 8.Science, Technology, and Society

Health and Fitness
Course: Welcome to Health and Fitness class. Think of this course as academic P.E. with some activity on the side. Our goal is to learn about basic structure and function of the human body and what we can do to maintain optimal physical, mental and emotional health throughout our lives. To achieve this goal, we need to make educated choices based on accurate information, information acquired from informed and qualified sources. We will also be researching conditions that can result from not taking care of our health.

Welcome to Health and Fitness- 2nd Semester

Fitness part:
Bring workout attire and be prepared to put it on every Tuesday.
We will be joining Coach Hughes for the famous “abs workout”
Strengthen the core and the rest will follow.
No whining (me included)
This is a participation grade, 14 Tuesdays-280 points

280 points
We will also make a walking program, when the weather is more “suitable” Snow shoeing/Nordic- may also be possible.

Other fitness activities may include ,basketball, yoga , hula hoops-WooHOO, Calenetics, aerobic workout design, light weights.

PHYSICS
Welcome. This is a continuation of a year long course is designed to present Physics concepts at an attainable, but challenging level and to show how the Natural world can be modeled through equations and how physcial science connections can be made across the curriculum. This semester we will be doing a number of projects designed to better understand physics concepts in depth.
Check out the website below for : Why every High School Student should study Physics and PHYSICS AND MOVIES!
