| READ ACROSS VIRGINIA |
The Accelerated Reader Program(AR) from Renaissance Learning is a learning information system that enables computer-assisted assessment of student comprehension of books. It is an individualized reading program where each student selects books from the library at his/her reading level and reads at their own pace. After reading the book, the students go to the computer and take a multiple-choice quiz available for the book
The AR Programs tests students on three key areas - Reading Practice, Vocabulary Practice, and Literacy Skills. The program also provides a summary and analysis of results to enable teachers to monitor both the quantity and quality of reading practice engaged in by their students.
For each AR book read, the student takes a test and receives a specified amount of points depending on the number of correct answers and the book's level of difficulty. The student can then visit the AR store which opens on specific days and can use these points in exchange for certain rewards.
The theme this year is Read Across Virginia and we at Green Run Elementary are proud that the AR program has been a huge success at our school. The culminating activity for those students who have reached the Atlantic Ocean region is a Dolphin Watching trip, run by the Virginia Aquarium. The boat trip leaves from the Virginia Beach Fishing Center at Rudee Inlet, 200 Winston Salem Ave., Virginia Beach, VA. This rewarding experience is a chance to see bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat and learn about the Aquarium’s research.
