Study Smart!!!
First…
*Sit in a QUIET place. Turn off the TV and radio.
*Don’t wait until the night before the test to start studying. Study your new notes the day that you get them. Then, look over your old notes.
How should you study? Try some of the following tips. Find out which ones work best for you and USE THEM.
1. Rewrite your notes. Type your notes. Or both!
2. Say your notes out loud to yourself. Sometimes, singing them to yourself works even better.
3. Make flashcards or a flip chart for your vocabulary words.
a. Read the word only.
b. Say the definition that you think is correct.
c. Flip the card over to see if you are right.
d. As you go through the flashcards, make a list of the words you get right and the words you get wrong.
e. Once you’ve been through all your flashcards, repeat a-c for the words you got wrong.
4. Cover and test method
a. Read only 1 sentence of the notes you took in class.
b. Cover the sentence up and either say it or write it.
c. Check your notes to see if you got it right.
d. If you didn’t get it right, repeat a-c again for that sentence.
e. Once you get the sentence right, move on to the next sentence.
**This words great for diagrams too! Cover up the labels and try to guess them correctly.
5. Find tricks to help you remember lists and the definitions of words. Write the tricks right in your notes.
For example,
--the 6 most common elements in biology = sulfur, phosphorus, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen (Think SPONCH)
--Mitochondria = organelles in the cell that make energy (Think Mighty Mouse uses energy to save the day)
6. Use a study buddy.
a. Give your notes to a friend or family member.
b. Have them ask you questions about the notes.
c. Answer their questions without looking at your notes.
d. If you get a question wrong, ask your study buddy to tell you the right answer. Make a list of the questions you get wrong.
e. After the last question, have your study buddy ask you the questions you got wrong again.
