Who are we?
Hamden High School’s Human Relations Club (HRC) has spent the last 20 years developing and implementing activities to reduce prejudice and discrimination and to increase cultural, religious, and ethnic awareness. Former Mayor Carl Amento has said, “They’ve taken the lead statewide and maybe even nationally in doing what ought to be done to promote our democratic values, which are to celebrate diversity and build bridges of understanding between people.”
Consisting of more than 200 members, the Human Relations Club is a student-run organization in which student leaders plan, organize, and coordinate all aspects of the club. The major activities sponsored by the club allow students the opportunity not only to devote themselves to worthy goals, but also to develop leadership skills. Officers of the HRC work year-round to plan the various activities that the club undertakes, which include community service projects, two teaching programs dealing with prejudice and bullying at the elementary and middle school levels, as well as an Annual Prejudice Reduction Conference which is being held this year at Southern Connecticut State University on May 21st 2009.
