| Welcome! Let's learn! |
My name is Mary-Elizabeth Luoma and this is my seventh year of teaching the second grade, which just happens to be the BEST GRADE EVER! I taught previously in Charlotte, NC and with Ms. Sessoms at Birdneck before making the switch to Cooke this year. Teaching is a true passion of mine and I am so thrilled to begin a new adventure at Cooke :)
I am married to a wonderful man named Brian and we own a 90 year old home in Norfolk (which always gives us LOTS of weekend projects). We have two dogs (Daisy Mae & Savvy) and a chubby cat named Miss Piggy. I enjoy reading, drinking coffee, working in the yard, exercise, shopping, exporing new places and being with my wonderful family. On Saturdays during the fall, you will find me cheering on my Florida Gators...GO GATORS!
I am truly looking forward to getting to know both parents and students this year. I will be teaching the Language Arts curriculum which includes reading, writing, phonics, word study and poetry. I believe in an open door policy so please feel free to stop by- I would love for you to be a part of your child's education! A partnership between parents and teachers make a child truly successful!

Welcome to second grade! My name is Mrs. Scarborough. This is my 10th year at Cooke Elementary, and my seventeenth year teaching for the Virginia Beach City Public School System. I grew up on the penninsula in Hampton and attended Bethel High School. Deciding to be close to home, I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree from Christopher Newport.
I truly believe Cooke parents and students are the best at the beach. In fact, I live right down the street from school with my husband, Sam and two children, Addie and Jake. Addie is a third grader this year, and Jake is in first. Sam actually attended Cooke School as well.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with the family which also includes a adorable black lab named Max. We attend Addie's soccer games and take trips to Blacksburg to cheer for Sam's alma mater, Virginia Tech. Lastly, I find time to teach fitness classes at Wareings Gym.
In closing, I believe communication and participation are vital components in making a child successful in school. Please feel free to contact me or set up a time to volunteer. We are off to a wonderful start. |

It all matters?
September 22, 2008 |
 |
For the next three weeks, students will be thinking like a chemist as they study and make observations about the basic types of matter (solids, liquids, and gases). Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Students will be conducting experiments and drawing conclusions on how temperature influences the changes in states or phases of matter. A study guide and vocabulary sheet will be sent home in the Thursday Fly Home folder.
