Homework
January 22, 2009 |
 |
| A packet of homework will be given on Friday and is due the following Friday. Please help your child do assignments daily and have them read to you leveled readers, 5-10 minutes a night. Please remember that homework is mandated by our school district and is not optional. Home reading is part of your child's grade on the report card for "Home Reading." Repeatedly missed homework will result in lowered grades. Your child will need the following items at home for homework: pencil, eraser, and crayons. For special projects, other items may be asked for. |

Reading Tips For Parents
January 22, 2009 |
 |
1) Let child take a picture walk through the book for about 1 minute or less. Child looks at pictures and gets an idea of what the book it about.
2) Read title of the book while pointing to each word. Have child point and read title. Child may read title page, if there is one.
3) Look at the first picture and see if any words on the page may match a picture clue. Such as picture of a dog, and word dog. Show how the word begins with the "d" and ask for the sound of the letter "d". Help the child point and read the pattern of the first page.
4) Let child read the other pages themselves, pointing to words and looking for picture clues that match words. Like "b", big dog.
5) Pattern at the end of a book might change, help them point and read words.
6) Ask what the book is about. Such as different types of dogs. Let them read again if they wish, pointing to each word. |

Kindergarten Math Standards
January 22, 2009 |
 |
California Math standards for Kindergarten include basic shapes, patterns and numbers 1-30. Basic time, money, addition and subtraction will be introduced by the end of the year. Room 13 Kindergarten will be following the Math program set up by San Diego City Schools. This program builds a strong foundation for basic math understanding.
Some parents may feel that the math program is not challenging enough for their child. Mrs. Jordan is aware that all children will be doing hundreds of hours of math homework in the next 12 years of their education.
Mrs. Jordan will not be sending home advanced math homework in Kindergarten. Parents are always welcome to supplement their child's education any way they wish. |
