These are the standards we will be working on in class for our alternate assessment, which runs from now until March. We will be working on many things in class, but we will try to relate the info back to these 2 standards. Look for the number 6, 7, or 8 to determine which 2 standards are for your child's grade level.

We will begin to collect data on GAA standards in November in all 3 grades. I will post the standards soon. 6th and 7th will work on data collection and rational numbers. 8th grade will work on square root and venn diagrams.
In class daily, we are working on IEP skills for math operations and we are focusing on money skills. Most of the class is comfortable in their knowledge of coins and value. We are working on adding coins and memorizing facts (ie.- 4 quarters=1 dollar= 10 dimes)

Each week, we will read an adapted newspaper (News2You) to learn about a current topic in the world. The topics vary from sports, movies, events, people, and places. If you would like to see more, go to my links section and view the sample newspaper or ask to see one when you visit the classroom. Our newspaper looks at one or two places in the news. We will use these to improve general knowledge and map skills.
We will study maps for the GAA.
6th- Australia-locate 4 places.
7th- Africa
8th- Georgia and its regions
We have collected 1st data and hope to get to the 2nd collection in the next 3 weeks.

These words will be a mixture of Dolch sight words (words that must be memorized to recognize on "sight") and vocabulary words from our weekly newspaper. I have three levels of functioning in my classroom for words.
Level 1 is at the picture recognition stage. When the word is said aloud, the student will point to the picture when shown to them in groups of 1,2, or 3.
Level 2 easily recognizes the pictures and can remember the shape or look of the word to match the word to the picture. I expect level 2 students to write the words, read the words with a parent or sibling, pick the word from a list or sentence, and match words to pictures.
Level 3 is the stage for reading the words. After a few days, the student can recognize the word in print and read it without the aid of a picture. As the student progresses through this level, I hope to see the student learning to spell the words for the week. Level 3 Students should read, write, and use the words in sentences.
