| Happy Campers 2009! |
This week, our paper is about the the new NASA administrator. It is also about Black History Month. In math, we are continuing money skills in all 4 operations. We are also working on using a times table chart (including filling one in)
The month of February will be used for completion of the GAA. Ms. Miller had started to teach some of my classes. By the end of February, she will be teaching all day while I get to observe how she teaches. She is making some changes to the class schedule and the discipline plan in the room. The old plan was working with most students, but it gave more attention to the loss of coins than on keeping coins. As the students have matured this year, they have needed reminders less to follow the rules. Our new behavior plan is more in line with the school's "Ranger Bucks" incentive program. We will continue to transition the program over the next week and a half. By the time we return from Winter Break, it should be set. At that time, we will send a new information sheet home to you. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

These are the standards we will be working on in class for our alternate assessment, which runs from now until March. We will be working on many things in class, but we will try to relate the info back to these standards. Look for the number 6, 7, or 8 to determine which 2 standards are for your child's grade level.
These Reading standards will be displayed and assessed with a cooking unit
ELA 6R1
Follows multi-step instructions to complete or create a simple product.
ELA 7 R1
Understands and explains the use of a simple device by following technical directions.
ELA 8R1
Understands and explains the use of a complex mechanical device by following technical directions.
These standards are being assessed paired with science and social studies standards:
ELA6LSV1 c, ELA7LSV1 c, ELA8LSV1 c-
Responds to questions with appropriate information.
In math, 6th and 7th are working on data collection and rational numbers (fractions, decimals, and percents). They are more than halfway through.
8th grade is working on venn diagrams and has completed the standard for square root.
6th grade- the Water cycle. We have completed this standard
7th Grade- Biomes (regions of the Earth). We are almost done with this standard. They will finish by the 1st week of February.
8th Grade- Simple machines-We have completed this standard.
We studied maps for the GAA in Social Studies. All standards are complete.
6th- Australia-locate 4 places.
7th- Africa
8th- Georgia and its regions
We expect to be done with all standards at the end of the 1st week of February. After that, we will begin working on projects on the computer. Miss Miller will begin teaching full time around that time as well.

These words will be a mixture of Dolch sight words (words that must be memorized to recognize on "sight") and vocabulary words from our weekly newspaper. I have three levels of functioning in my classroom for words.
Level 1 is at the picture recognition stage. When the word is said aloud, the student will point to the picture when shown to them in groups of 1,2, or 3.
Level 2 easily recognizes the pictures and can remember the shape or look of the word to match the word to the picture. I expect level 2 students to write the words, read the words with a parent or sibling, pick the word from a list or sentence, and match words to pictures.
Level 3 is the stage for reading the words. After a few days, the student can recognize the word in print and read it without the aid of a picture. As the student progresses through this level, I hope to see the student learning to spell the words for the week. Level 3 Students should read, write, and use the words in sentences.
