Science Quiz
May 29, 2009 |
 |
Today there will be a quiz on plant parts and photosynthesis. Look for notes and booklets in the science notebook, and know the following items:
1. roots - anchor plant; get water and nutrients from soil
2. stem - keeps plant upright; transports water, nutrients
3. leaves - makes food for plant (photosynthesis)
4. sepals - leaf-like structures that protect the flower
5. flower (which includes...)
A. petals - brightly colored to attract insects
B. stamens - male reproductive part; makes pollen
C. pistil - female reproductive part; in center of flower
D. ovary - at bottom of pistil; contains eggs; develops into fruit after fertilization
E. seed - new plant containing an embryo
F. fruit - protects seeds; many happen to be tasty to humans
Short version of how flowering plants reproduce:
1. Pollen from another plant is rubbed on the pistil by an insect.
2. The pollen fertilizes an egg located at the bottom of the pistil, the ovary.
3. The egg becomes a new seed, containing an embryo.
4. Fruit develops around the seed to protect it.
5. Fruit is picked or falls from the plant.
6. The resulting seeds may grow into new plants if conditions are right.
Photosynthesis: How plants make their own food. The leaves contain chlorophyll which traps light and gives leaves their green color.
sunlight water nutrients carbon dioxide = SUGAR
- Oxygen is released after photosynthesis. |

Science Quiz
January 16, 2009 |

This quiz will be on SOL 4.3 - Conductors, Insulators, & Static Electricity.
Know these concepts:
-Conductors easily allow electricity to pass through them. Know examples of them such as metal (iron, copper, aluminum), water, ans skin.
-Insulators do not easily allow electricity to pass through them. Know examples of them such as rubber, wood, glass, and plastic.
-All objects have protons (+) and electrons (-). Static electricity occurs when an object is charged with electrons, usually by rubbing it.
This will cause it to attract objects that have a positive charge, such as making your hair stick up.
It will also cause charged items, like balloons, to stick to walls.
Lightning is also an example of static electricity. |
