| Mr. Burke's Homepage |
Welcome to my webpage. This year marks my 30th class reunion. Wow, where did the time go ? That's right, I graduated 30 years ago from WHS. This year, I am also celebrating 19 years of teaching at WHS.
I also serve as the advisor to the Ellen Bevins Chapter of the National Honor Society and the WHS Student Council.
The picture on the right is of Troy street rapper, Grandmaster B. He recently appeared in my first period AIS class to encourage students to stay in school and not to give up.
Grandmaster B never finished high school and he makes a living rapping on the streets and collecting bottles and other refundable objects. He lives in a van by the Hudson River.
Some claim that he and I resemble each other and that we have never been seen together. However, "B" is quick to respond that, ''Mr. Burke is way busy chasing after spiritual and intellectual pursuits and hanging out in used record stores."
Keep up the good work.
Happy New Year !
Mr. Burke

A.I.S. is a class.
It is a federal mandate and part of the No Child Left Behind Act. Students are placed into the class in order for them to receive extra assistance.
The goal is to prepare students to successfully pass their Global Studies class, the New York State Regent's Exam in Global Studies, or both. Students cannot graduate without completing these requirements.
An emphasis is placed on the following:
(1) Improving test taking strategies
(2) Essay writing
(3) Study Skills
Once students have shown improvement in their regular social studies class or have passed the State exam,
they are removed from A.I.S..
A pre-test and a post -test is given to measure student achievement.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALLIE CAPONE AND NAE WHITE FOR SUCCESSFULLY PASSING THE JANUARY 2010 GLOBAL STUDIES REGENTS EXAM.

One of America's greatest radical historians, Howard Zinn, has passed away.
Zinn's book,"A People's History of the United States" contains a vivid historical account of all the forgotten people as well as the dark side of beloved historical figures from Columbus and Lincoln to Franklin
Roosevelt.
The book is filled with brutal honesty and compassion. It is history from the bottom up versus the top down.
It made me want to share the stories and to become an educator.
Here is a link to his website.
Thank you, Howard Zinn.
