Re: Helping Children Here
Sent: Thursday, October 08, 2009 12:10 PM
To:
Stamidis, Lisa
Dear Lisa, Thanks for your note -- and for the kind words. I am still very much in touch with Lafeyette and Pharoah, but because of our closeness I feel somewhat protective of their privacy. I don't want to betray that friendship. So I apologize for being a bit circumspect, but here's what I can tell you. The family did move out of public housing shortly after the book came out, into a new townhome built by a nonprofit housing group. Pharoah, who's now 30 (I know it's hard to believe), graduated from high school, and briefly attended college. Lafeyette, who's now 33, not long ago married his longtime sweetheart and they are raising a son together. It's been a struggle for both. The scars from their childhood run deep. I nudge them along at every opportunity, and someday, when their feet are more firmly planted, I hope to write a follow-up. Again, thanks for writing. There's nothing more rewarding to an author than to know how invested readers get in the people he's written about. It's always encouraging to hear that the book is being used in classes, and having spent time in your area (I attended school at Wesleyan) I know well that distance between those who have and those who have not. Sincerely yours, alex kotlowitz

Mr. Kotlowitz;
My name is Lisa Stamidis and I am an English teacher in Hamden, Connecticut (right next to New Haven). My students are reading There Are No Children Here for our class. It has been a powerful book because many students live and near the impoverished areas of New Haven, while others are developing empathy for the struggles of the Rivers' and their neighbors.
I am writing to you because currently students have been asking me where Pharoah and Lafayette (as well as LaJoe and the rest of the family) are today. I tried to look online, but haven't found anything.
Can you help us out?
Thanks for helping my children!
Respectfully,
Lisa Stamidis
