We are currently working on our Geometry unit: Shapes, Halves, & Symmetry
The students haven't realized it yet, but we are teaching them the concepts behind mulitplication! The curriculum sets them up for understanding multiplication as repeated addition versus the way we learned it way vack when! They will not be required to memorize multiplication facts!
We will also introduce fractions to them in this unit. Don't be worried! This is my favorite unit because it teaches the children in a way that allows them to truly discover math concepts in their own. It is usually a fun, active unit that the students have fun with while learning.
They are all doing very well with telling time! Start quizing them at home and ask what time it is when you sit down to eat or leave for practice. This will allow them to start developing an understanding for ellapsed time.

During Reading we are working on weekly stories that focus on specific reading strategies for the students to practice and implement in order to become better readers.
We have a weekly assessment based on the story that we discuss. The students are learning test taking strategies in order to prepare them for the years of school ahead of them!
We are also implementing various technology in the classroom during Literacy Centers. If you are having trouble keeping your child interested in reading try logging them onto the Internet and letting them listen to a book! They are also very into learning about the world around them at this age. If you take them to the library and show them books on how things work or even an all about (pick an animal) they may surprise you!
Destination Success is becoming a really great tool to use in our classroom! Don't forget that you can log on at home! We are assigning weekly tasks that will help them with their assessments.

We are learning all about the weather! The students have been studying the seasons and learning to read a thermometer. Another project we are working on is recording rain fall.

We are working on functional writing. We have learned to write step-by-step directions. Now, we are turning those directions into paragraph format. We have been addressing the Writing Standards daily to see if we are meeting them.
Writing Standard 3: Language Use & Conventions addresses the students vocabulary, spelling, sentence structure, punctuation, & capitaliztion. We created a class rubric that allows the students to check their own work before conferencing.
