Composition and Literature
College Composition and Literature is a full year course offered in conjunction with
Fergus Falls Community College. Upon completion of this course, students will
receive 12 college credits that are transferable to most State University sites,community colleges and some private colleges and universities. (Please check with your counselor, to see if the credits will transfer to your chosen school.) This course is divided into three components: Eng. 1101 College Writing. Composition: A
survey of mechanics, style and structure in a good composition. Students will master the fundamentals of composition and write several expository essays after studying models. This course also emphasizes the relationship between logic and
rhetoric writing, which culminates in writing an argumentative research paper,Eng. 1102 Composition and Literature. Literature: Students will gain an appreciation of the literary values of fiction through the study of contemporary short story authors. This unit will also include the study of a novel as a major literary form; an analysis will follow in the form of a panel presentation. Composition: Students will write literary essays analyzing the main elements of literature. Eng. 2235 Intro to Literature Drama and Poetry.Literature and Composition: The study of poetry encompasses reading a variety of types of poems for appreciation and explication. The unit will include some creative writing of poetry as well. The study of drama begins with a close analysis of a Shakespearean tragedy, followed by an independent opr group study of another classic drama. A literary essay will follow each play. Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation & Pass the MSCTC-FF sentence skills assessment. Must maintain a “C” or better average with a GPA of 2.8 or greater



First quarter will consist of expository writing and beginning the research paper. Students will learn the research components and writing process. We will also focus on vocabulary aquisition.
English 10
This year-long course uses an integrative approach to develop students’understanding and appreciation of literature and to improve their communication skills. The students read and discuss a variety of short stories, poems, plays, novels, and nonfiction while building their writing skills through the study of spelling, vocabulary, grammar, usage and composition techniques. Students will meet the Public Speaking graduation standard by learning & practicing the fundamentals of public speaking and deliver the following types of speeches: information or demonstration, persuasion, and oral interpretation.


We will be working on the elements of literature through short stories and the novel Of Mice and Men. We will also be working on a speech and writing component by giving a group panel presentation and informative speech. For writing, the class will be writing a variety of essays and other journals. Students will also engage in vocabulary acquisition by completing vocabulary units every other week or so.
