Science 8 Honors
Honors Class on the Web! http://www.vliet.neric.org/WJSHS/news/2012-13/13-02-27_NanoCareerDay.cfm
This class will accelerate the Physical Science class that introduces students to chemistry and physics from September through December. The second half of the year, January through June, students will study an introduction to nanotechnology. This class also reviews all science taken since 5th grade to prepare for the NYS Intermediate Science 8 Exam. Students in this class also take Math 8 Honors. _______________________________________ Remember to sign up on the "Subscribe for updates" on the left so you can be notified when changes have been made AND Register for Class!! The videos are a supplement to classroom discussion and will help you better understand the scientific concepts we are learning and practicing in class. You will need to download FREE MP4 Software to be able to view and listen to the Podcasts. Click on the highlighted words for a direct connection. Watch the Nova movie Brain Power by clicking on the highlighted words. Watch the Chapter 15 Video on "Waves" by clicking on the highlighted word. WATCH THE CHAPTER 17 Video on the "Electromagnetic Spectrum" by clicking on the highlighed words. This is the NASA video that we began in class - AWESOME Stuff!! 2013 Science/English Research Project
Here are all handouts to help you complete your 3-Panel Display based on your English Research Paper. Your Science Display Panels will become a part of the 2013 Science Exhibit to be held the night of our school Spring Concert in May. Your Science 3-Panel Display will need to be completed outside of class time. Ms. DeGraw and I strongly encourage you to complete as much research as possible while in the Media Center during our scheduled time in February.
Science 8
This class is a one year course of Physical Science that includes an introduction to chemistry and physics. This introductory course in chemistry and physics provides a foundation for high school level physical science classes. Students are introduced to chemistry the first half of the year with discussion on matter and different states of matter, atomic structure and the Periodic Table of Elements, chemical bonds and chemical reactions, acids, bases and solutions, carbon chemistry and organic compounds, polymers, composites, ceramics, glass, and radioactive isotopes. Students apply such scientific concepts as Charles’s and Boyle’s Gas Laws, neutralization reactions, hydrocarbon model construction, and perform exothermic and endothermic reactions in laboratory experiments and classroom activities.
Students are introduced to physics the second half of the year with discussion on motion, force, energy, waves (sound, light, electromagnetic), electricity and magnetism. Students apply such scientific concepts as Newton’s three laws of motion, Pascal’s principle, Archimedes’ principle, Bernoulli’s principle, the relationship between work and force, mechanical advantage and efficiency, simple machines, the properties of waves, and the relationship between electricity and magnetism in laboratory experiments and classroom activities. Classroom instruction also includes the development of organizational, note taking, study, computer, research, scientific methods, and group activity skills. This class will also review all science taken since 5th grade in preparation for the NYS Intermediate Science 8 Exam.
