Mr. Treanor's Science Classes
My name is Mike Treanor. Welcome to my latest website.
I have a Chemistry degree and credential. I have been teaching Chemistry for 11 years. In addition, I recently completed requirements to become qualified in Physics. I have also taught Earth Science, Algebra 1, and Driver's Education, and though I am not the most qualified person to teach those three subjects, I have been very successful. One of my main goals is to use technology in an effective way to expand and improve the chemistry and physics education offered to my students. I have many links to online resources that are used in my classes, recently including the fabulous Khan Academy. I also have copies of most notes and handouts used in class, some answer keys to check work, links to science information, and maybe a few random things. Teachers share strategies often and many of the ideas and handouts have come from other teachers over the years. Special appreciation to Mr. Allen at El Diamante High School who has made many valuable resources available freely. Email me if you find a typo or have any suggestions. Most documents require the adobe acrobat reader, which is a free download.
Starting in 2012, everything used in Mr. Treanor's Chemistry classes will be online. Paper copies will not be used at all unless it is for an in person group activity in class. All makeup quizzes will be online. Lab reports will be typed online. All homework will be online using the model championed by Khan Academy (check out this 60 minutes story about KA: http://www.khanacademy.org/talks-and-interviews/v/khan-academy--the-future-of-education). Following these methods will allow for much more of our limited time in class to be used for valuable practice, guidance, discussions, projects, and experiments. Some resources and instructions are found at the bottom of this page in the class downloads section.
AVUHSD Course Description: Chemistry is one of the building blocks upon which our technological society is based. A strong background in the chemical nature of matter is necessary in order to be a knowledgeable and contributing member of our society. Chemistry is intended to provide a foundation for those who intend to continue their education in college or a trade or technical school. It is also intended to meet the needs of those students who choose science or medical based employment following high school. Chemistry is a college preparatory course designed as a survey of atomic and molecular structure, chemical and physical properties of matter, reactions, organic and nuclear chemistry. Mathematics is used to solve problems related to the chemical concepts studied. Laboratory experimentation is extensive and comprehensive and involves the application of chemical concepts and qualitative and quantitative laboratory methods. This is a college prep (California A-G lab science) course with high expectations. Pre-Requisite: Algebra 1 and permission of instructor. Be prepared for a demanding and challenging class! Teachers share strategies often and many of the ideas and handouts have come from other teachers over the years. Special appreciation to Mr. Allen at El Diamante High School who has made available to others some very brief and concise internet resources for years. Email me if you find a typo or have any suggestions. Most documents require the adobe acrobat reader, which is a free download. Chemistry Spring Final Exam Prep

This is a detailed description of a lab report format that has a lot of good information.
I especially liked how it includes instructions on using Microsoft Word features to make a professional looking report. If you are unsure about how parts of a lab report should look or what parts should be included, take a look at this file. I did not write this paper, so it has some information that you would have to change to reflect our class and school, but it is a great explanation. (19.18 KB)
