The following attachment shows a list of study suggestions to prepare for this exam.

Additional Suggestions:

1. Study Nervous system: Na+/K+ Pump Notes, Parts of the Reflex Arc, Divisions of the nervous system (i.e. central vs. peripheral; somatic vs. autonomic), Synapse Notes.

2. Study Immune System Notes: Focus is mostly on Humoral vs. Cell-mediated Response.

3. Study Hormones Notes.

4. Study Genetic Basis of Embryonic Development Notes - (See Q #4-7 on Wksht I).

5. Study Ecology Notes.

**For Cliff's AP Guide, you can read part of the
"Animal Form and Function" Chapter: Thermoregulation, The Nervous System, The Immune System (the endocrine system is very detailed - I would just focus on your notes for this).

**I would also recommend taking the 2002 and 1999 practice exams I handed out on Friday. These are optional activities, however. Each one needs to be scored slightly different. Please read below:

2002 Exam (Give yourself about 82 minutes)
Questions to cross out (you can go ahead & physically cross these out on the exam):

Friday: Deadline to register for the SAT Subject Test (homework)
Due Date: April 5, 2013
If you are going to take the Saturday, May 4th Subject Test in Biology, today is the deadline to register Online at www.collegeboard.org. Leave yourself about 20 minutes or so to do this as you will need to create an account with the College Board first. Once you get to their Homepage, click on "SAT" at the top left corner. When you take the Biology Exam, there will be two versions: "E" for Environmental and "M" for Molecular. You will want to choose "M" as we have covered molecular biology extensively. You shouldn't need to choose which version you are going to take until you actually show up to take the exam.
Friday: Test Re-writes Due! (homework)
Due Date: April 5, 2013
Your Test Re-writes are due today!

You may come in any day before school or after school to work on these. You may also come in "A" days at lunchtime.
Friday: Review Wkshts Due! (homework)
Due Date: April 5, 2013
Review Wksht A and Lab Review #1 Due today!

I am expecting you to be as resourceful as possible regarding the review worksheets. Make sure you are not trying to complete these assignments "off the top of your head". You will need to utilize both your notes and your AP labs to complete these sheets. We will only have about 10 minutes at the beginning of each period that these assignments are due. If you think you need more help than what classtime will allow, you will need to come in before school, lunch, or after school to get help.

For the Review Wkshts, you will need to locate the appropriate note sets.

For the Lab Reviews, you will need to use the AP Labs as a guide. The number for the Lab Reviews and the AP Lab number do not correlate. For example, Lab Review #1 focuses on AP Lab 13. So, just focus on the TITLE of the Lab Review and match that title with the appropriate AP lab.

Tuesday: Multiple Choice Portion of Exam (homework)
Due Date: March 19, 2013
The Multiple Choice portion of Exam 4 will be given today.

Multiple Choice
Topics Covered:
1. Biotechnology/Genetic Engineering
2. Evolution
3. Classification
4. Earth's early atmosphere/origin of life
5. Viruses
6. Bacteria
7. Protists
8. Fungi
9. Plants
You will have to respond to 65 multiple choice questions for this portion of the midterm exam.
To prepare for this part of the exam, you need to read the following chapters in the Cliff's AP Guide and complete the practice questions at the end of the chapters: "Molecular Genetics" (only read the "Recombinant DNA" section). Look at questions #16, 19, 20, 21 for that chapter. Also read the "Evolution" Chapter (all practice questions), the "Biological Diversity chapter (you can skip the animal kingdom reading and questions), and the "Plant" chapter. You can skip anything in the plant chapter that we did not cover. This goes for the questions at the end of the chapter as well.
You also need to complete (and study) the practice multiple choice questions. Remember, focus on the questions at the end of the AP labs (AP Lab 6a, 6b, 8, 9a, and 9b), then note sets for ALL topics, and if you have time, worksheets. Bell Questions can also be handy to identify important concepts. To review your notes, one student suggested scanning your notes and highlighting anything that is still "fuzzy" that way, you can go back through your notes a second or even a third time only focusing on the concepts that you need to focus on.
You can also download the Greed Game (M.T. #4) in the Downloads section of this website (bottom of this homepage)- you can disregard any information in this GREED game we have not covered as I have not had time to modify/update this game to reflect changes in the curriculum. You can also come in during the times specified to play Greed with other AP Biology students. PLEASE NOTE, however, that these review cards should only be used as a supplemental review strategy.
If you are still not sure how to study, click on "Study Strategies" at the top of this homepage.

You can come in today to play GREED before school and during PAT/Lunch. This is the last day you can earn extra credit toward your midterm exam.

Monday: Essay Portion of Exam (homework)
Due Date: March 18, 2013
The Essay Portion of Midterm Exam 4 is today. You have 4 topics to study including:

1. Darwin's ideas about Natural Selection vs. modern principles of Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, punctuated equilibrium, & genetic engineering. This question encompasses a few broad topics - studying the majority of evolution notes should help.
2. Mechanisms leading to Genetic Variation in a population. To study for this part of the essay, refer to the "Genetic Variation/Mutation" notes. The 2nd part of the essay is going to ask you to describe the mechanisms for evolution. Refer to the "Mechanisms for Evolution" notes to prepare for this portion.
3. Transpiration - You will be asked to interpret data in reference to transpiration as well as produce two graphs. You might want to take a look at first semester material (Pillbug Lab and Tips for Writing essays; also take a look at any past essays you've written in which were asked to graph data)
You will also be asked to talk about TACT forces and how these contribute to water replacement in a plant. See your notes on Transpiration for this portion of the essay.
4. Hardy-Weinberg and genetic inheritance. The first part of this essay will ask you to analyze data to determine the pattern of inheritance (i.e. autosomal dominant/recessive or sex-linked dominant/recessive). To prepare, you will need to look through the Fly Lab (AP Lab 7) for cross #1 only. It would be good to focus on Cross #1 for Lab II and III. However, you do not need to worry about chi-squared. It might also be a good idea to read the Introduction for Fly Lab I.
For the second part of this essay, you will be asked to take a data set to determine whether a population is in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium. To practice this, you can look at AP Lab 8 (last two pages). This is where the Hardy-Weinberg practice problems are located.
Friday (homework)
Due Date: March 15, 2013

Friday: Quiz! (homework)
Due Date: February 15, 2013
Today you will take a quiz (really more like a test) on genetic engineering & evolution.
Look over your notes for both of these units. The quiz will cover vocabulary from the genetic engineering notes, restriction enzymes, gel electrophoresis and transformation. For transformation, look at AP Lab 6a - make sure you can answer the questions at the end and that you know what each "control plate" tells you. The LB/Amp/Ara plate is the "experimental" plate and rest are controls. For AP lab 6b (electrophoresis) make sure you can correctly identify band patterns for DNA (in terms of base pair length) that has been spliced with restriction enzymes - Also see the pop quiz I gave you for electrophoresis.
For evolution, focus on the Evidence for Evolution Note set, Mutations Notes, Speciation Notes, and Mechanisms for Evolution Notes. Review Worksheet I and II should provide a good review as weII.
You will have two Hardy-Weinberg problems. Make sure you understand how evolution can be measured (i.e. what do biologists look at specifically to determine if evolution is occurring in a population?)
If you need additional practice with Hardy-Weinberg, see practice problems below.

Today, Per 1A and 2A will take the multiple choice portion of their midterm exam.

You will be asked to respond to 75 multiple choice questions for this portion of the midterm exam.
To prepare for this part of the exam, you need to read the "Cell Division", "Heredity", and "Molecular Genetics" Chapters in the Cliff's AP guide. Remember for the "Molecular Genetics" chapter that you can skip "Molecular Genetics of Viruses/Bacteria" and "Recombinant DNA". Make sure to practice answering the questions at the end of each chapter.
You also need to complete (and study) the multiple choice questions that I handed out separately in a packet. In addition, any worksheet, lab, Bell Question, or note set needs to be thoroughly reviewed.
To review your notes, one strategy might be to scan your notes and highlight anything that is still "fuzzy". That way, you can go back through your notes a second or even a third time only focusing on only the concepts that you are still having trouble understanding.
You can also go back through the following Online Activities found on the textbook website:

Chapter 16
1. DNA and RNA Structure
2. DNA Replication Overview

Thursday: Midterm Exam (homework)
Due Date: January 17, 2013
Today, Per 1B and 2B will take the Essay portion of the midterm exam and the Biology EOC.

Today you will take the Essay portion of your midterm exam.

You will need to study the following topics. Each period, topics will be chosen randomly.

1. Mitosis/Meiosis - be able to track chromosomes through each of the processes (see assignment #99 - Mitosis/Meiosis Drawings) and be able to explain Mendel's 1st and 2nd Laws (segregation and independent assortment). You will also be asked to apply the two laws to chromosome behavior during Meiosis. You would want to specifically refer to the alleles. For example, for the Mitosis/Meiosis drawings, we used various alleles (Bb,Ff) - could you explain how the movement of these chromosomes during Meiosis applies to Mendel's laws? You might also look at the notes we took on Mendel's laws as well as Q #8 and #9 on AP Lab 3B.

2. Protein Synthesis: Be able to transcribe a segment of DNA to a protein. You should be able to describe the processes of transcription, mRNA processing, and translation in as much detail as possible.

3. DNA Replication: If you are given a DNA molecule to begin with, could you describe how it replicates and results in two new DNA molecules?

4. See sample question that I handed out (Gene Linkage/Chi-Squared) - also uploaded here if you would like to print it yourself. The question you will be given will be very similar, however, the data will be changed.

Thursday: Final Exam (Mult Choice) (homework)
Due Date: May 10, 2012
Today you will take the Multiple Choice portion of your final exam. There will be 90 Multiple Choice questions given. You will need a #2 pencil today.

To prepare for this portion of the exam, I would suggest taking the two practice exams I sent home with you. The final exam will cover material from the beginning of the school year through current material. Also see the "Study Suggestions" document below for May 14th. The study suggestions for the AP Exam are the same as for your Final Exam.
Wednesday: Final Essay (homework)
Due Date: May 9, 2012
1 Essay topic will be chosen randomly for each period. Please remember to bring a blue or black pen.

Essay topics will include:

Q1: Protein Synthesis and Mitosis/DNA Replication

Q2: Mitosis vs. Meiosis (Focus on AP Lab 3B - Formation of spores in Sordaria - don't worry about gene linkage); Make sure you can also describe the steps of mitosis!

Q3: AP Lab 10 - Physiology of the Circulatory System - effects of exercise on heart/breathing rates in humans; effect of temperature on heart rate of ectotherms - Make sure you can graph a data set and design an experiment regarding either of the above topics.

Q4: AP Lab 8 (Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium) and 5 assumptions of Hardy Weinberg. You will have to use the equation to determine whether a population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Make sure that you understand how these 5 assumptions/ criteria are related to the 3 mechanisms of evolution.

**If you would like to look over essays that have been asked on past AP Exams, you can follow this link to the AP Central site and click on "AP Courses and Exams", then click "AP Biology", next click "AP Biology Exam Information" - this should lead you to the correct page, but you will have to scroll down a bit. The essays are organized by year. Or you can copy/paste the following URL which will lead you directly to the Essay Page:

Friday: Review Labs Due! (homework)
Due Date: April 20, 2012
Complete AP Lab Review 3 (Mitosis/Meiosis) and Lab Review 7 (Drosophila) to be turned in today during class.

For Lab 3B (Meiosis) the descriptive paragraph is a little confusing. Toward the middle of the paragraph, there is a sentence that reads, "In "normal" organisms" - cross out this sentence & replace it with the following: "Once the 4 haploid cells are formed in Sordaria, each haploid cell undergoes mitosis."

For the Lab 7 review, I am giving you ALL of the information you will need to complete a review of all three crosses. I provide you with the parent phenotypes, the F1 phenotypes, and I also remind you which alleles are dominant & recessive. You just need to set up your punnett squares and calculate the predicted F2 ratios.
Thursday: Digestive System Notes (homework)
Due Date: April 19, 2012

Corrections: On Review Wksht C, there should be 3 reactants and 3 products for #10 and #11. On #24, the word "reduced" should be changed to "phosphorylated".
On Lab 4, for #3, there should only be 2 molecules that are considered carotenoids.
For Lab #5, Respirometers 1 and 4 should have had germinating pea seeds and #2
Thursday: Invertebrate/Vertebrate Quiz (homework)
Due Date: April 12, 2012
For the quiz, you need to study the notes we took on the Animal Kingdom, the Echinoderm/Mollusk development lab (questions at the end), and the Invertebrate and Vertebrate packets. Make sure you study ALL of the vocabulary! For the invertebrates, Focus on their order of evolution - you will have to know this (see evolutionary tree). There will be a wordbank at the bottom and you will have to know which phylum evolved 1st, 2nd, etc. Also focus on the characteristics listed at the top of the invertebrate sheets that place them into that phylum. For example, for sponges, you need to be able to at least recognize the phylum name, know the common name (sponge), know that they have specialized cells only and are therefore, called parazoans. Also, make sure you know the major evolutionary developments for each phylum. For the vertebrates, know their order of evolution, be able to recognize their class names, and know their major mode of development/reproduction and excretion. Make sure you focus on their evolutionary trend: water to land. Be able to distinguish between endothermy and ectothermy as well.

You might print out the "Final" Greed game found in the Dowloads section. It includes questions about invertebrates & vertebrates.
Tuesday: Review Wksht B/Lab Review 1 Due! (homework)

Friday: Review Wksht A/ Lab Review #2 (homework)
Due Date: April 6, 2012
Review Worksheet A and AP Lab Review #2 are due today. There is 1 correction to make to Lab Review #2: For Part 2B, it says that we measured enzyme activity by rating bubble intensity on a scale of 0-3. This has actually been changed. We measured oxygen production in mL using graduated cylinders.

If you have questions, we should have a few minutes at the beginning of the period to go over answers. If you have a lot of questions, you probably need to come in for help, though.

You will need to print out the three documents posted here to complete your April homework. If you cannot print these for some reason, just let me know.

You will have to respond to 75 multiple choice questions for this portion of the midterm exam.
Also read the "Evolution" Chapter (all practice questions), the "Biological Diversity chapter (you can skip the animal kingdom reading and questions), and the "Plant" chapter (complete all questions for this one).

You also need to complete (and study) the practice multiple choice questions. Because there were very few questions included that focused on plants, you might want to look over the plant questions that you can download here. #4) in the Downloads section of this website (bottom of this homepage) and also come in during the times specified to play Greed with other AP Biology students.

Thursday: Invertebrate/Vertebrate Quiz (homework)
Due Date: April 7, 2011
For the quiz, you need to study the notes we took on the Animal Kingdom, the Echinoderm/Mollusk development lab (questions at the end), and the Invertebrate/Vertebrate packets. For the invertebrates, Focus on their order of evolution (see evolutionary tree wksht. For the vertebrates, know their order of evolution, be able to recognize their class names, and know their major mode of reproduction, respiration, excretion, and circulation. Make sure you focus on their evolutionary trend: water to land. Be able to distinguish between endothermy and ectothermy as well.
Monday: Invertebrate Packet (homework)
Due Date: April 4, 2011
Make sure to finish up the Invertebrate Packet for Sponges through Segmented Worms. We will continue with Arthropods when we return from Spring Break.

2. Evolution
3. Classification
4. Earth's early atmosphere/origin of life
5. Viruses
6. Bacteria
7. Protists
8. Fungi
9. Plants
You will have to respond to 75 multiple choice questions for this portion of the midterm exam.
Also read the "Evolution" Chapter (all practice questions), the "Biological Diversity chapter (you can skip the animal kingdom reading and questions), and the "Plant" chapter (complete all questions for this one).

You also need to complete (and study) the practice multiple choice questions. Because there were very few questions included that focused on plants, you might want to look over the plant questions handed out separately on Monday (3/14). You can also download those questions here. #4) in the Downloads section of this website (bottom of this homepage) and also come in during the times specified to play Greed with other AP Biology students.

2. Evolution
3. Classification
4. Viruses
5. Bacteria
6. Protists
7. Fungi
8. Plants
You will have to respond to 75 multiple choice questions for this portion of the midterm exam.
Also read the "Evolution" Chapter (all practice questions), the "Biological Diversity chapter (you can skip the animal kingdom reading and questions), and the "Plant" chapter (complete all questions for this one).

You also need to complete (and study) the multiple choice questions included in the review packet. Because there were very few questions included that focused on plants, you might want to look over the plant questions handed out separately on Friday (3/19). You can also download those questions here. #4) in the Downloads section of this website (bottom of this homepage) and also come in during the times specified to play Greed with other AP Biology students.

Look at the "Activity Quiz" you turned in for chapter 20 - it is #81A and review those questions instead. In addition, any worksheet, lab, Bell Question, or note set needs to be thoroughly reviewed. You need to study all notes after the "Designer Babies Film Questions". To review your notes, one student suggested scanning your notes and highlighting anything that is still "fuzzy" that way, you can go back through your notes a second or even a third time only focusing on the concepts that you need to focus on. Also remember that the activity entitled, "Diversity in Prokaryotes" that you did in the computer lab served as your notes for bacteria. You can also go back through the Online Activities found on the textbook website that were assigned as homework for this unit.
