Physical Education/Health/Study Skills
General Physical Education
This is a required class for graduation. The emphasis in this class will be placed on having fun while focusing on fitness, wellness, & skill development. There will be exposure to a variety of team, life, & dual activities. These activities will include, but not be limited to, volleyball (sand & court), ultimate frisbee, tennis (court, table, & floor), badminton, softball, flag football, basketball, swimming, lacrosse, & floor hockey. Physical fitness will be emphasized throughout each unit, while students develop a personal fitness plan.
Health
The philosophy of this class is to provide an environment in which there are a variety of learning experiences enabling each individual to adjust more intelligently and more healthfully to our changing society.
Learning to Study Effectively
This course is designed to bring study strategies to content areas. In this course students will learn how to effectively use note-taking, time management, effective test taking, test & assessment preparation, test-taking skills, enhance memory, and research skills as it would be applied to their extisting classes. In addition, there will be an intent to make the strategies inherent in the students so that the skills can contribute to independent learning as a lifelong strategy.
Personal Fitness
This course is designed for students of all skill levels. Students will be weight training 3 days of the week and the other 2 days will be spent participating in team/lifetime sports. this class will emphasize physical fitness, strength training, wellness, and athletic skill development.
Principles of Leadership
The purpose of this class is to introduce important theories, concepts, & practices relating to leadership. The course is designed primarily for students who wish to develop the knowledge, skills, & dispositions needed for effective leadership. Students will learn how to build teams, distribute responsibilities, & understanding one's self while learning to manage emotions under stressful situations which are crucial to developing effective leadership.
Team/Individual Sports
This class is designed to provide the more skilled, athletic, and highly competitive students an opprotunity to improve their team/individual sports skills and fitness. Through a high level of competition, students will be able to demonstrate those skills using sportsmanship, respect, leadership, and postive attitudes in many activities including but not limited to; football, softball, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, floor hockey, broomball, badminton, table tennis, water games, basketball, & ultimate frisbee.
Weight Training
Students will explore and experience the realm of physical conditioning through weight-lifting, flexibility training, and plyometrics. Each student will have a computerized fitness plan for their potentials and limitations. The primary emphasis of this class is the development of muscular strength and endurance, using the "Bigger, Faster, Stronger" program. Other health related componenets will be addressed throughout the term.
