In this class, we will be studying American society and values through the reading of American literary works; such as, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, Their Eyes were Watching God, Death of Salesman (play), and the essays of Thoreau and Emerson. We will explore questions such as: 1) What is an American and what values do we share? 2) What is courage? 3) Who am I and what is the purpose of life? 4) In what ways can we find true contentment?
