Language is interdisciplinary. By comparison to first language classes, second language is deceptively uni-disciplinary. The old view that second language learning was the procedure of categorizing language, that is formulating a grammar through which the content of the language is accessed. The new view is that language study is the use of a language to create content through the language, without explicit grammatical knowledge of the language as a prerequisite. Therefore language learning is learning anything and everything through the language, whether first of second -- the common exception being classical languages, the role of which is to give form to the modern language as a substantive area in and of itself, or, classical languages are the antithesis of current pedagogy because it defined the previous form of pedagogy.
This necessitates the field of paleography to define a language as a historical substance and the field of deconstruction to un-define language as a singular, known quantity within the area of Latin, and Latin as content. |
