I have been teaching at Magnet High for 18 years. I have bachelors degrees in English education and journalism and a masters degree in English. I think the area where I can help my students grow the most is with reading in writing. Again, welcome and let me know if you have questions. Do You Enjoy Reading?
updated October 11, 2011 If you enjoy reading and would like to let this work toward your grade, here's the way to do it. Choose a book from the titles listed, read it, and see me for a test and/or conversation to determine...
A Day English III Honors
This is an American literature survey course that integrates history and literature in an effort to encourage a better understanding of America from the founding of the nation to the present. Students participate in individual and group projects, class debates and discussions, and American art units, in addition to regular classroom instruction. The class begins with the Puritans and moves through literature to the authors of our time. Connections and parallels are recognized with America's changing voice in literature and writings are tied to events in history and art. An important component of the class is writing and literary analysis. A great deal of instruction is devoted to learning to critically read literature and write literary analysis essays. Students leave the class well equipped for their next English class and for college. In addition, we have regular grammar and vocabulary assignments and activities.

A Day Newspaper
The newspaper class is made of several different components:
* in-class journal writing - a prompt is on the board at the beginning of class and students are given 10 minutes to write about this prompt. Journals are checked periodically. This is an easy way to earn points. * Spelling and Grammar - students are introduced to spelling and grammar topics that relate to their needs in newspaper. * Nonfiction Book Reading - this is intended to expose students to quality writing and, thus, help improve each student's writing. Currently, students are reading Night, and each student was given a copy of the book. * Story Assignments - students will write 3-5 stories each nine weeks. They will be graded on depth of research, flow of writing, use of quotes and other primary information, accuracy, and grammar. |
