Welcome to 4-Red!

  Welcome to a New Year!

Look at What's Happening in 4-Red
Math-The children are becoming quite adept with long division! They are able to divide 4-digit dividends by 2-digit divisor!  We continue to work on spiraled skills each morning in class and for homework each day to keep all the concepts we've learned fresh in our minds. The children really enjoy reviewing learned skills during workstations and are excited to "scoop up their facts" in our mad minutes each week. Many are approaching the 12 times tables and some have even moved on to building "division sundaes." Mrs. Honan and I enjoy co-teaching and are very excited about  the progress our students have achieved.

Reading- In Unit 2 we are reading the following stories: My Brother Martin, Mighty Jackie, Making a Splash, Wild Horses, and Mystic Horse. To continue to grow as readers, we will focus on the following comprehension skill: author's purpose, main idea and details,  cause & effect, and sequencing.

Writing-We are working on improving our skills as writers by using STRONG verbs in our writing to show rather than tell the reading what is happening.

Religion- In Chapter 11, we are studying the 3rd commandment and learning how it applies to our everyday lives.

Social Studies-As we finished up our unit on land regions, we had the opportunity to share a little information about our great state of New Jersey with 4th grade students from Aviston School in Illinois. We created a book about some of the places we've visited in New Jersey to share. Each student designed a picture about a place they've visited, wrote about it, and went to the computer lab to type it  using Microsoft Word. The book was sent to Illinois along with some souvenir T-shirts that the kids designed showing some places of natural beauty in the northwestern region of New Jersey. We are currently beginning a project to learn about the Native Americans from New Jersey.

Grammar- Our focus is currently on nouns. We are reviewing common, proper, singular, and plural nouns. We have also begun working with singular and plural possessive nouns.

XTRA MATH- Please encourage your child to practice their basic math skills on the site. It take less than 10 minutes per session, and the payoff is HUGE in reinforcing these necessary skills.
