Math
This nine weeks we have covered fractions, three digit addition with regrouping, making change, and measurement. We are currently learning about different units of measurement. We have been using rulers and measuring objects in centimeters and inches. We also have been comparing inches, feet, and yards as well as millimeters, centimeters, and meters. We will move on to measuring temperature with thermometers this week. Please continue to practice two-digit subtraction to extend progress with this skill.

Reading
In reading, we are progressing well in our groups. We are focusing on improving fluency. Second grade standards require students to read 90 words per minute. Our comprehension concepts we are working on are main idea and inference.
During our Language Arts/ Reading block we have been covering synonyms, antonyms, plural/singular forms, prefixes, suffixes, root words, dictionary skills, ABC order, parts of speech, as well as many other concepts.

Writing
The genre of writing our class is working on is persuasive writing. We read the story "I Wanna Iguana" by Karen Kaufman. It told the story of a young boy convincing or persuading his mom to allow him to have an iguana as a pet. The mom was in turn persuading the son that he didn't need it. This sparked our creativity and the students are currently writing a piece where they have to convince someone to allow them to have a new pet. Writing conventions are still a priority. We are continually working on sentence structure, using capital letters and punctuation appropriately, and adding details to engage the reader.
