4th bloc students completed the documentary, Super Size Me, and began the rough draft for an expository essay on the experiment. They also completed an Every Day Edit. We will write the final draft for the essay next class.

 

Today in 9th Lit..Wednesday, December 5

3rd block students completed Act 3 of Romeo and Juliet, both reading and completing questions. They also worked on writing using the Schaffer system to complete paragraphs with quotations and parenthetical documentation. We will continue R+J on Friday, completing Act 4.

 

4th block students completed the second part of the EOCT and viewing Super Size Me. Students will write an expository essay on the documentary Thursday and Friday.

3rd Block students reviewed the Act 2 questions from Romeo and Juliet, then took a quiz on Act 2. They watched some of the DVD and took home the first page of the Act 3 questions to work on for homework. We also reviewed lit terms and did a grammar warm-up Every Day Edit, "Basketball."

4th Block students did a grammar warm-up Every Day Edit, "Basketball," and reviewed research, citations, and poetry terms for the EOCT on Tuesday and Wednesday. We also continued to watch and answer questions for the documentary, Super Size Me. 4th Block students took a "practice" EOCT reading portion, then watched part of the non-fiction unit's documentary "Super Size Me" and began completing guided notes. Today in 9th Lit...Thursday, November 29

3rd Block students worked on the "annolighting" assignment for the balcoy scene in Romeo and Juliet and turned it in. They then worked on writing a constructed paragraph on Romeo and Juliet's "love." Finally, they watched a few minutes of the DVD, Romeo +Juliet.

4th Block students worked in their workbooks on research, conventions, Georgia authors, and literature terms. They also made a "vocabulary map" for literature terms.

 

Today in 9th Lit... Wednesday, November 28

3rd Block did not meet.

4th Block- students completed workbook pages GA 54-65. This work addresses the "Writing" portion of the upcoming EOCT, which will be given on Tuesday. Students reviewed research techniques, bibliography entries, parenthetical documentation, and writing and revising techniques. Finally, we reviewed poetry terms and analysis with a reread of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven." The packet for this is to be completed for homework tonight.

 

 

Today in 9th Lit.  Tuesday, November 27

3rd Block- class completed an EDE "Iceman" and did an "annolighting" exercise for the balcony scene of Romeo and Juliet. Working with a partner, students went line-by-line through the scene, highlighting and annotating the meanings, metaphors, and gist of this very famous piece of writing. After the annolighting, students started the Act 2 questions, which must be completed for homework.

 

4th Block- students completed an EDE "Iceman" and wrote a business letter in which they requested a refund or exchange for a defective product. After this, they finished watching "Akeelah and the Bee" and completed the questions that go with the viewing. Finally, students took home a work packet on Mass Media- practice for the EOCT.

4th Block students wrote and wrote today!!! They completed workbook pages GA 45, 47, 49, and 51 on research writing to prepare for the EOCT. They wrote an autobiography of themselves (obviously) and a biography of a partner in class. Finally, the watched a few minutes of the true story of "Akeelah and the Bee,"

 

 

Today in 9th Lit...Friday, November 16

3rd Block students turned in a "packet" of five daily assignments from the week for a 50-point formative grade. These included EDE's, workbook pages, and questions from Romeo and Juliet. We read the end of Act 1 of R+J and watched to the balcony scene of Act 2. More on Romeo and Juliet after the break. Students should make up missing assignments over the break and turn them in on the Tuesday we return from Thanksgiving. Check Pinnacle for missing grades- "z" grades. I'm always available after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays unti 4:30 for individual tutoring and make-up work!

4th Block- students read and watched MLK's "I Have a Dream Speech," took notes on the literature terms for a persuasive speech, and found examples from the speech which Dr. King used.

 

Today in 9th Lit...Wednesday, November 14

3rd Block- Students completed an Every Day Edit, "The Hope Diamond," and turned in their homework questions from their textbook, pg. 778-9 on the background to Shakespeare's theater. They also read Act 1 of Romeo and Juliet, then watched it on DVD. For homework, they are to complete the guided questions from Act 1.

4th Block- Students completed an Every Day Edit, "The Hope Diamond," and completed the workbook page 123, non-fiction terms. They watched "Mythbusters" and wrote ten questions and answers about the DVD. Finally, they analyzed the top ten Super Bowl ads of 2012.  Students need their textbooks tomorrow, as we will be reading King's "I Have a Dream Speech."

4th block -Students took notes on advertising techniques, completed a workbook exercise, pg. 3,  on non-fiction, and worked in groups to analyze ads. They also completed a ticket out the door based on a video commercial for a minivan.

3rd block- Students began reading Romeo and Juliet- prlogue and Act 1. They also completed an EDE.

4th block- Students finished an EDE and wrote an essay on Romeo and Juliet finding someone to blame for their deaths. They did a prewrite, rough draft and final. This will be a summative grade.

Students in 3rd Block will warm up with an "Every Day Edit," which checks for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage skills. These are similar to a section of the EOCT. They will also continue reading "Speak" and finishing the guiding questions for the reading. The reading and the packet should be finished by Friday, October 26.

Student in 4th Block will warm up with an "Every Day Edit," and will finish their Act 2 Romeo and Juliet questions and turn them in. They will also complete "The Necklace" packet for test corrections for those that needed to do the remediation from the fiction unit test.

Students in 3rd and 4th Block took the Scholastic Reading Inventory in the computer lab to determine if they will need a reading class next semester. Students also began to get together four assignments from Romeo and Juliet, given out while the sub was here, to be turned in for a homework packet grade on Friday (formative grade of 50 points). These include a crossword puzzle of drama terms, an anticipation guide, a background worksheet, and R&J Act 1 Questions. These are due along with an Every Day Edit on Friday for both classes.

Students in 4th block took the REALLY BIG MID-TERM EXAM! This was mostly a test of reading comprehension, vocabulary in context, and literature terms. They also turned in flashcards of the lit terms for a daily "formative" grade. On Monday we will continue Romeo and Juliet.

Students in 3rd block took a quiz for the reading on "Speak" and worked on study guides for the novel. The study guide is due the day of the test. Students also competed a "ticket out the door" Every Day Edit.

Students in 4th block read Act 2, Scenes 1 and 2 from Romeo and Juliet. They also began a study guide of questions for Act 2, to be turned in when we finish the play. The midterm is tomorrow, which is an analysis of "cold reads" for reading comprehension, as well as some literature terms. Students should have flashcards of these.

Students in 4th block reread the Prologue to Romeo and Juliet, listened to it, clapped to the rhythm of iambic pentameter, and walked in circles, turning directions every time they heard the pauses. Students listened, read, and read "Thanatopsis" by William Cullen Bryant, which means "seeing death." We compared it to a song by Death Cab for Cutie, "I Will Follow You Into the Dark," and then used an analysis called SOAPStone to better understand the poem and its message. We discussed poetic devices in both pieces. Finally, we answered guided questions on "Thanatopsis" and the general reaction of Romantic writers to that of their Puritan ancestors. Student should continue to work on their tiered assignments, which will be due Tuesday, Dec. 4.

Students looked over the ATA's from yesterday and made test corrections. We also reviewed pages to look over in the textbook to study for the test tomorrow. Happy studying!

 

Today in AP Psych...Tuesday, September 25

Students completed  the Almost There Assessment. This is NOT a grade and goes into Pinnacle as "zero weight." It is used for students to judge where they need to put the most effort into studying for the actual exam.

Remember to study your textbook nightly, and that the tests are cumulative.

 

Today in AP Psych...Monday, September 24

Students worked on 2 crossword puzzles to review for the ATA test- these cover Ch. 2 and 3 terms. We also continued to watch Awakenings. There will be a reflection paper due for Awakening on Friday (3-5 paragraphs).

 

 

 

Today in AP Psych...Friday, September 21

Students continued to watch Awakenings, and we reviewed briefly for the ATA coming on Tuesday. Remember, this is not just for Chs. 2 and 3- it's cumulative! Study all materials- the AP test covers it all. :)

 

Today in AP Psych...Thursday, September 20

Students received their quizzes back- many A's! We also began watching the film, Awakenings, about Dr. Sack's experiments with encephalitis patients. We will continue this tomorrow.

 

Today in AP Psych...Wednesday, September 19

Students turned in their vocabulary for chapters 2 and 3 and took the quiz. The ATA is Tuesday, Sept. 25, and the test is Thursday, Sept. 27.

Students FINALLY finished the power point for Biological School. The vocabulary for this unit is due Wednesday and this quiz is also Wednesday.

 

Today in AP Psych...Monday, September 17

Students took notes on the power point for Biological School of psychology. The Vocabulary for this unit is due Wednesday, the day of the quiz. Outlines were returned.

 

Today in AP Psych...Friday, September 14

Students took notes on the power point for Biological School of psychology. They worked on keeping their synapses firing, despite the excitement of a football Friday. We will continue this power point on Monday in class. Students should also work to complete their vocabulary, if they've not already done so.

Students watched a documentary on the brain in altered states- hypnosis, etc.. Students worked on vocabulary, which is due Tuesday, Sept. 18

Students watched a documentary on the brain during sleep cycles- circadian rhythms, REM, etc. Students also turned in outlines to Chapters 2 and 3 and worked on vocabulary.

Students worked on the outlines for Chapters 2 and 3, as well as the vocabulary terms. Outlines due Wednesday, and vocabulary due Sept. 18

Students worked SO hard today, outlining Chapters 2 and 3. They were also given the list of vocabulary terms for these chapters. The outlines are due Wednesday, and the vocabulary is due next Tuesday, Sept. 18.

Students saw the results of their "Almost There" tests, and made the necessary test corrections. Students are now equipped with all the materials they need to study for the "no kidding" test tomorrow. This chapter is "Research," but it is cumulative, so the founders will be on the test, too. Students highlighted and attached the rubric to their DBQ essays. These will be graded tonight. They also continued to work on their study guides- due Wednesday.

 

Today in World History...Monday, October 8 (teacher absence)

Students began their study guide to prepare for the test. This will be checked in class on Wednesday, and the Almost There Test is Thursday. The final test for the unit is Tuesday, October 16

 

Today in World History...Friday, October 5

Students wrote an in-class essay of 5 paragraphs on the fall of Rome using their DBQ packets that they've been working on since Monday. We will grade them in class on Tuesday using the county rubric and highlighters! For Monday, students will complete a study guide for Chapters 5 and 6.

Today in World History...Thursday, October 4

Classes that met- 1, 2, 4, and 7- completed the DBQ's in preparation for tomorrow's in-class essay. Please bring your packet, notebook paper, and a blue- or black-ink pen. Students should continue to read Chapter 6 "Rome" in their textbooks.

 

Today in World History... Wednesday, October 3

Most classes did not meet today because of the Georgia High School Writing Test and PSAT practice. However, students should continue to read Ch. 6 "Rome" in their textbooks. We will complete the DBQ packets tomorrow and write and in-class essay Friday.

 

Today in World History...Tuesday, October 2

Students began working on the DBQ project. This work and the in-class essay they write on Friday will be a test grade. They should read Ch. 6.2 in their textbooks tonight.

 

Today in World History...Monday, October 1

Students took notes on 6.1 "The Roman Republic." The power point for this is on my links under world history resources. We will begin the DBQ project which will ultimately lead to an in-class written essay for Friday. Students should read 6.1 in their textbooks tonight to review.

 

Today in World History...Friday, September 27

Students answered questions #15-18 on pg. 150 in their textbook and copied the chart on the same page to finish their review of Ancient Greece. They also used the workbook to complete pg. 55-58- intro to Rome.

Today in World History...Thursday, September 27

Students took the Mid Unit Benchmark (MUB) today. This was a 20-question quiz given on I-respond of the vocabulary terms they have been studying for two weeks. These will be part of the unit test on Ancient Greece and Rome which will be given October 11. Students should be finishing their vocabulary for Rome, which is due Friday. In addition, they need to complete the questions in their textbook on pg. 150 #15-18. Students need to bring their textbooks to class Friday.

 

Today in World History... Wednesday, September 26

Students reviewed Ch. 5 Greece vocabulary terms for tomorrow's quiz. They also worked on Ch. 6 Rome vocabulary, and took review notes on Ancient Greece. The test for the unit on both Greece and Rome is Oct. 11.

 

Today in World History...Tuesday, September 25

Students took notes on the Golden Age of Greece and continued to work on vocabulary for Rome. The quiz for the Ch. 5 vocabulary terms is Thursday (Greece) and the Ch. 6 vocabulary terms is Friday (Rome). The test for this unit, both Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, is Oct. 11.

Please continue to read your textbook nightly. If you do not have a textbook, the bookroom is open each morning. You MUST have a textbook.

 

 

Today in World History...Monday, September 24

Students used I-Respond to complete a 20-question activity comparing the governments and cultures of Athens and Sparta. They then took notes on Athens and Sparta, and wrote a one-paragraph ticket out the door explaining which society they would prefer to live in.  The Vocabulary quiz for Ch. 5 Greece (MUB) has been moved to Thursday because most of our students will be undergoing a hearing and vision screening, and the vocabulary for Ch. 6 Rome will now be due on Friday.

Remember, LEAP tutoring is availabe every Tuesday and Thursday after school in the Library. See me for a form. :)

 

Today in World History...Friday, September 21

Students used the atlases to complete three worksheets on Ancient Greek trade routes, colonies, and the conquests of Alexander the Great. The vocabulary for ch. 6 "Rome" will be due Tuesday. The MUB for Ch. 5 "Greece" terms will be Thursday.

 

Today in World History...Thursday, September 20

Students watched the video "Archimedes" and wrote 3-5 facts for a "ticket out of the door" summarizer assignment.

 

Today in World History...Wednesday, September 19

Students turned in their vocabulary (facts and terms) for Ch.5 Greece. They also worked in their textbooks- charts and maps for pages 128, 132, and 134. These were turned in at the end of class. Both may be turned in Thursday for 10% off. Remember, use "World History resources" link on the right sidebar for access to the textbook online.

 

Today in World History...Tuesday, September 18

Students took notes from the power point labeled 5.1 Cultures of the Mountains and the Sea. If you missed it, you can find it under My Links, World History resources. Vocabulary for Ch. 5 Greece is due tomorrow with definitions and examples.

 

Today in World History...Monday, September 17

Students continued to work on vocabulary for Ch. 5, Ancient Greece. This is due on Wednesday for 36 points as a formative grade.  They also began a chart project of Greek mythology, which is due on Friday for 36 points as a project grade. The "MUB" mid-unit benchmark quiz for the vocabulary will be Tuesday, Sept. 25.

 

 

Today in World History...Friday, September 14

Students began introduction to Ancient Greece. We discussed famous famous Greek-Americans (myself included!) and began the vocabulary for the unit. They may use their textbooks and/or their workbooks to define and discuss the significance of each term or fact. There are 40 terms for Greece, so homework is necessary to complete this assignment adequately! The vocab for this chapter is due Wednesday, Sept. 19 at the beginning of class.

 

Today in  World History ... Thursday, September 13

Students took the unit test for Ancient Civilizations- Egypt, India, China, Mesopotamia, Hebrews, Phoenicians, Assyrians, and Hittites (whew!). Next unit is Greece and Rome!

Students studied for the test- page numbers from the textbook were given- great charts and maps to help study:

Students took notes from a power point on Ancient China and India, and notes were provided for those with accomodations. Students also are working on completing their definitions and examples of vocabulary for chapters 3, 4, and 7. All of these will be due Friday at the beginning of class, so work hard to complete these at home!
