Examples of Annotated Bibliography
updated October 10, 2010
For History Fair Projects The Annotated Bibliography • All projects must have an annotated bibliography of five or more sources. Do not list the encyclopedias you used for general background information. • At least two sources should be “primary” if at all possible. • Use standard bibliographic form for all information from each source. • Separate primary from secondary sources. List the primary sources first, then the secondary sources, each list should be in alphabetic order. • Annotations are brief descriptions of the sources and how each was used in the development of the project. • Annotations for primary sources should explain why the source is primary for your topic. Examples of Annotations Primary Foner, Phillip. The Factory Girls. Chicago: University of Illinois Press, 1977. This collection of documents tells of the struggle for shorter working days and better working conditions which eventually brought about the beginning of the first trade unions of women workers in the United States. The Queen of Fashion Monthly. Vol. XIX, No. 11. New York: July, 1892. This 1892 fashion magazine provided pictures of tailor-made gowns of the latest style. There are also a number of advertisements for sewing machines throughout the magazine showing models and prices. Secondary Bettmann, Otto L. The Good Old Days: They Were Terrible. New York: Random House, 1974. Sewers for the garment industry often worked in sweatshops. Most workers were women, children and immigrants. Each worker had a set quota and most worked eighty-four-hour weeks at a wage averaging five cents an hour. Paradis, Adrian. The Labor Reference Book. Philadelphia: Chilton Book Company, 1972. A very extensive reference which details how the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union was formed in 1900. This was the first union to offer six-day work weeks, ten holidays per year, and workers would be paid immediately instead of having to wait for garments to be sold.
