Syllabus Soaring to new heights 2011-2012

MIRAMAR HIGH SCHOOL Mrs. Hall-Rose Reading Department Portable 3 Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year. You will be embarking on a challenging and rewarding experience in Reading. I am reminded of a Chinese Proverb- I hear I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand. Let us all "do" so we can soar to new heights as Miramar Patriots take off. As we enter into this 11th grade year it is imperative that you realize that you need to take responsibility for your actions. You will be learning to make responsible choices whether it is in school, at home or in public. Every student deserves to be in a classroom where he or she can excel and make positive strides in their education. In my classroom there will be certain standards that you will need to adhere to in order to make this a successful year. The classroom rules, consequences for inappropriate behavior as well as reward for appropriate behavior will be listed as follows: Classroom Rules • All Miramar High School Rules and Code of Conduct Rules must be followed. • Be respectful, courteous to others and mindful of their properties. • Be in your assigned seat when the tardy bell rings • Come to class prepared to work (pencil, paper, pens, notebook, and novel) • Raise your hand to be recognized. • When the teacher is speaking you will cease talking and listen attentively. • Students are expected to follow the teacher’s direction the first time it is given. • Absolutely no grooming in class. (grooming items – brushes, combs, mirrors, lotion, perfume, cologne makeup etc. are not to be used in the classroom. If used these items will be confiscated. • The bell does not dismiss you, I do! Consequences 1st Violation-Warning (verbal) 2nd Violation-Change of seat (phone call home) 3rd Violation-Detention 4th Violation-Referral to Administration Rewards • Daily praise • Positive phone call home • Breakfast or lunch per period • Success in Achieving a level 3 or better on the FCAT, Receiving a High School Diploma not a School Leaving Certificate. Tardy Policy You are expected to be in your seat and ready to work when the tardy bell rings at 7:40 a.m. • 1st Tardy-Verbal warning • 2nd Tardy-Phone call home • 3rd Tardy-Detention ½ hour • 4th Tardy-Extended detention 1 hour Late Policy For each day an assignment is late it will be dropped a letter grade. Make-up Policy Students will have two days for each day absent to complete assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to retrieve work from assignment folder. **Remember to check http://classjump.com/h/hall-rose if you are absent . Restroom Policy Students will be given four (4) bathroom passes per semester. Once you have used up all your passes you will be not issued others. You are encouraged to use the bathroom during change of classes. NB If you have three or more passes remaining at the end of the semester you may relinquish for extra credit points Materials • 3 Duotang folders with prongs for vocabulary, class-work, and Homework • 1 Composition Book • 1 Novel of choice per Semester (Be mindful of the language the writer uses.) • Highlighter • Pens and Pencils • Index cards Grading Grades will be based on class-work, homework, quizzes, tests and special Projects. Students will receive a minimum of two grades (2) per week. Grades will be assigned based on the following. • Test and Quizzes 25% • Class Assignments 25% • Class Participation 25% • Homework 25% 90-100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C 60-69 D 0-59 F Our goal at Miramar is excellence in education. It is important that you encourage your child to read daily from different genres, practice utilizing vocabulary words as this will enrich their comprehension and promote fluency in reading. Ensure that homework assignments are completed in a timely fashion. Classroom Procedure Students are expected to follow and adhere to these procedures • All assignments must clearly contain: Name Period Date Title of Assignment Any work submitted without a name will be discarded. • Homework will be given weekly (Parents will need to sign off on assignments). Home-work must be placed on my desk upon entering classroom. No assignment will be accepted after the class has started. Homework assignments will be written on the West white board. • Makeup work/Test- Makeup work will be in assignment folder at the front of class. It is your responsibility to retrieve and complete assignment in a timely fashion. Tests: You must see teacher to make arrangements for make up test. *********Students must maintain a copy of Rules and Procedures in their Notebook We Are Clear & Ready for Take-Off !
