| Unit 3 - Human/Environment Interaction in North America (Oct. 1 - Nov. 6)

|
This four week unit is design to examine the interaction between people and the physical environment. We are looking at North America with an eye to landforms, climate zones and ecosystems for clues about how humans have been shaped by the environment and how it has been altered in exchange. This is our first full thematic unit where students manipulate and interpret data, design graphs, evaluate evidence, learn to screen information, begin to cite information, create persuasive advertising, borrow creative formats, use the internet in a web 1.0 format, and judge the influence of landforms.
Note to parents - This unit marks the "ramping up" of my curriculum as we make ready for 7th grade. I am not using a portfolio approach as I did in the first two units - every assignment will be graded. A very handy template for making accurate pie graphs in my class. Understanding how data should look requires slowing down and counting and crafting the presentation. To use: use a ruler to connect the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock bigger marks. This will create a cross hair, from which the pie pieces pivot. There are 100 "ticks" around this graph which matches the 100% that goes along with data displayed in pie format. Your data must add up to 100% to use this. |

| Unit 3 - Assessment Rubric (43.61 KB)
I will do three checks of the interactive notebook using this rubric. I am grading 2-3 stations at a time, so the best practice is to finish each station as homework the day that a student works that station. Ask your child where they started on this rubric (depending upon at which table they are seated), and trace each station that they worked, checking to see if they have completed the station. |
