I Know My Role! School, Home, and Community!
Spring Fever at South Park As South Park students head into Spring, the time spent on learning how to be a good friend will improve the quality of relationships, develop respect for self and others as well as help students to understand their responsibilities in friendships. All these concepts are supporting those skills that students are learning within their own families. Throughout the month of March, we will talk about the specific ways that students contribute to their family life and to the South Park community. By exploring the jobs and tasks that they complete in each of these areas, K-2 students will continue to develop self-esteem by exploring the contributions they make. Second grade will begin to identify with a more global perspective by considering ways to improve their community around them. South Park will begin building on the Bucket filling concept as well to help support the positive relationship skills and conflict resolution strategies that we shared in December. In December, we shared thoughts and feelings about self in order to help students make connections with their peers. I have encouraged all grade levels to use their words with each other in assertive ways, not aggressive ways when they experience problems with friends. This continues to build on the strategies of walking away or the other self-monitoring concepts we have learned with personal safety skills. Each of the strands and concepts explored continue to build on each other to ultimately give students a foundation. March is no exception and continues with a focus on self and personal growth within our families, school, and community. Self-esteem and a healthy self-image will continue to be built upon as well. In December, I shared a story about the Wemmicks with all grade levels. It focused on the importance of believing in one's self and not being overly concerned with what others think of us. It is meant to help students think about what is special about them and who we choose to listen to, self or others when determining self-worth. Thank you for allowing me to build upon the foundations that you as parents have begun with these little Spartans in order to help them grow into responsible citizens. It is a priviledge that amazes and awes me each week as we discuss being the best Spartan that they can possibly be. As we head into the last quarter soon, we begin to prepare students for the assessments, review the goals they set, and talk about what has been accomplished. Our little Spartans will be sharing with you the joys and growth that personal, social, and academic successes bring in all areas of their lives.
