Business Computer Applications
This computer class is for 10th - 12th grade students at Jonesboro-Hodge High School who have shown a general interest that far exceeds that of their peers in the area of computers. In this class, students will apply and expand upon the computer skills they learned in Keyboarding. The aim of this course is to deepen students' understanding and use of basic software programs (word processing programs, spreadsheets, databases, desktop publishing programs, and photo editing programs) as well as the Internet, along with improved proficiency in keyboarding skills.

Students will use Internet resources and various software programs, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access as well as Photo Editing Software like Photoshop and some HTML editing software. Students will understand the importance of following the district Acceptable Use Policy, and the legal and ethical issues that are related to computer usage. In addition they will learn how to navigate the Internet wisely and safely while using technology as a tool to enhance their learning. Finally, they will learn computer terminology, keyboard shortcuts, and the internal parts of the computer.

Class Objectives

* Use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.
* Use technology resources to identify and provide possible solutions to real-world problems.
* Use a variety of media and formats to communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences.
* Demonstrate knowledge of the nature and operation of technology systems.
* Demonstrate proficiency in the use of technology.
* Demonstrate knowledge of ethical, cultural, and social issues related to technology.
* Practice responsible use of technology systems, information, and software.
* Demonstrate knowledge of technologies that support collaboration, personal pursuits, and productivity.

Class Format

As students enter the class each day, they will spend the first 15 minutes of class practicing and improving their keyboarding skills by following the prescribed lessons in our keyboarding program. They will progress at their own pace while working toward a goal of 35 words per minute with an 80% accuracy rate. Keeping one’s eyes on the screen, rather than on the keyboard, will be emphasized.

After the first fifteen minutes of class, instruction will begin. It will usually take place in a whole group setting, with discussion and the modeling of skills and concepts. Students will then work from their computer to complete a project of some type. Students will sometimes work alone, while at other times they may work with a partner or in a collaborative group.

All required work will be completed in the computer lab. Sufficient time will be given for the completion of all assignments. However, students must complete class assignments within the prescribed time limit. Due to the fact that not every student has a computer at home, homework assignments will not be given.
