COURSE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Attendance policy: You are expected to attend every class meeting and be on time.
· In case of illness, the student is responsible for any work missed.
· Late arrivals and early departures will also affect your class participation grade. In case exceptional circumstances make it impossible for you to be in class, it is your responsibility to speak with me about your particular situation.
· Ask to go the restroom in case you really need to go. PLEASE, DO NOT ASK FOR PERMISSION TO GO TO THE REST ROOM IF WE MEET AFTER LUNCH.
Participation and Performance
Class participation will consist of:
· In class-assessment (i.e. active participation, reading, writing, listening, and attendance)
· FOOD, DRINK (EXCEPT WATER), AND CELL PHONE USE ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE CLASSROOM AT ANY TIME.
Daily preparation
The class will be conducted in French, and students will be expected to adhere as much as possible to the course policy of speaking as much as possible in French during class time. You will not learn French simply by “talking about” the language! You need to hear it, speak it, read it, and write it on a daily basis to gain proficiency.
Maximize the time outside of class by preparing yourself in advance for the concepts that will be covered in a specific class period. You are expected to come to class with a certain amount of knowledge so that the bulk of class time can be devoted to communicative activities. In-class vocabulary and grammar explanations will be offered; it is, however, your own responsibility to go over the new vocabulary and grammar explanations before coming to class and to constantly review all material covered in class.
Homework
· All homework assignments will be posted on line, and you are responsible to write it down in a planner. PRESENT OR NOT, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL HOMEWORK ASSIGNED.
· Homework may include studying lessons in the text book, downloading and completing worksheets and explanations posted on line, doing on line activities, writing out textbook exercises, writing short compositions, memorizing a passage, or any other assignment designed with 3 goals in mind: to prepare you for language practice in class; to develop your skills; and provide you with the tools necessary for success.
· You are expected to submit homework assignments on the due dates. Late work without prior consent will be downgraded.
· Extra credits will be allowed once you have talked to me.
· Assignments will be marked:
1. Excellent
2. Très bien
3. Bien
4. Passable
Compositions/Writing
· Some short compositions may be assigned periodically. All compositions must be typed, double-spaced, using a 12-pt font, with 1” margins.
· All instructions must be followed and the topic must be addressed fully to earn points. There will be a grace period for compositions; they will not be accepted past the graced period.
Tests
· Quizzes will assess your knowledge of both French grammar and vocabulary. They may or may not be announced. A quiz might consist of short exercises or a dictation. No make ups will be given without prior consent. A missed quiz will incur a grade of F for that quiz.
· Chapter Tests: There will be 3. They will assess your ability to understand spoken and written French, your ability to write in French and your knowledge and understanding of the readings and of the cultural practices and products in the French and Francophone world. No make ups will be given without prior consent. A missed test will incur a grade of F for that test.
· Oral Presentations: Each student will work with an assigned partner to write and deliver two oral presentations: once at the end of the first semester, and once at the end of the year. Specific instructions will be given closer to the due date.
· Final exam: It will be cumulative and comprehensive.

You may not have an outside person correct or edit your work prior to handing it in. You are responsible for making yourself aware of and understanding the HIS policies and procedures governing academic integrity. These include cheating, fabrication and forgery, multiple submission, plagiarism, complicity and computer misuse. Translating a previously existing work into French does not fulfill the requirements of a composition. Cheating on an assignment or test will result in a grade of F for that assignment /test.
