Child Development
This course explores child growth and development from conception to school age, including the knowledge and skills that contribute to the optimum development of children through meeting their emotional, social, intellectual, health and safety needs. Students practice communication skills, plan developmentally appropriate play experiences, practice positive child guidance techniques, and develop workplace skills working with preschoolers in the East Ridge Raptor Preschool Program.
Food & Nutrition
You are what you eat! So what do you eat anyway? Foods and Nutrition will teach you how to prepare, select and eat food for a healthy mind and body. This course will alter your lifestyle or at the very least get you thinking about what you should be eating. A variety of cooking experiences will show students which cooking methods produce a more healthful outcome. We will delve into nutrition by studying the nutrients as they relate to food choices and the food pyramid. Nutrition through the lifecycle is one topic that will be incorporated into every unit. Students will create a snack buisness and will "sell" their food product as a hands on, real world experience. Other experiences will revolve around speakers and projects related to topics such as genetically modified organisms, portion distortion, and eating disorders.
Foods of the World
Let your taste buds do the traveling. What we eat, where we eat and how we eat reveals a world of food and culture. In this course students learn about food in a global perspective and why people eat certain foods, how these choices are influenced, along with traditions and customs of various cultures while experiencing new flavors and recipes.
