Ms. Wright Welcomes Grades 4 & 5 Dolphins!
As the Reading Specialist for Grades 4-5, I'm excited about this new school year- and all the possibilities it holds! I'm very pleased to work with all students in their Language Arts classes. Sometimes I may conduct a whole class lesson, or your teacher and I may team teach together. On occasion I may work with small groups, or assist individuals. We may work on writing, reading or word study during our time together. Even though I may not see you everyday, know that I'm always thinking about the Dolphins at Landstown Elementary. I'm proud to say that I've been at LES from the time it opened many years ago!!!

DRA2 Assessment
The Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA2) is a systematic program that allows the teacher to observe, record, and evaluate a student's reading ability. The results of these individualized assessments help teachers determine each students reading level, and plan for further instruction. Fourth grade DRA's are administered in September and October.

Language Arts Assessments
Virginia Beach City Public Schools has developed a series of assessments to measure student progress on grade level objectives throughout the year. Test items reflect the format of SOL and Stanford 10 assessments. The results of these tests are analyzed to plan for future instruction. The first Language Arts assessment of the year will be administered the week of Sept.10-14

Language Arts, Grades 4&5
Reading Specialists provide support to the classroom teachers, in the areas of reading, writing, and word study. Whole class lessons, team teaching, small group/individual student assistance, and collaboration with classroom teachers are a few of the ways Landstown's students and teachers in 4th and 5th grades are supported by Ms. Wright, the Reading Specialist.

Reading Comprehension Strategies
There are several strategies good readers use, which include: Predicting, Making Connections, Visualizing, Clarifying, Questioning, Inferring, and Synthesizing.Use of these strategies can help all readers maximize their reading comprehension.
We hope all students will use these strategies during independent reading, as well as practicing at school.

Student Independent Reading
Students in grades 4-5 are encouraged to independently read 20-30 minutes a day, in addition to any assigned homework they may have that evening. Frequent reading of a variety of genre, fiction and non-fiction, increases fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. The more experiences students have with text, the more successful they will be in all subjects.
