Computer Applications
Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, & PowerPoint

Learn four widely used applications in the business world. You can use them in your every day life, too!

This week you will be learning how to create a worksheet, bar chart and pie chart in Excel. The project for the first unit will be to create a budget for the month of December and show expenses as a pie chart and bar chart.

Desktop Publishing
This is a fun course where yo learn how to design publications. We are currently using InDesign and Photoshop to create business cards, letterheads, tri-fold brochures, newsletters, CD covers, and a booklet.

This week will be learning how to create business cards and use typograpy and transparent backgrounds for pictures. Next week, you will be creating your own business card.

Please complete the following seven projects if school should be closed for a week.


ASSIGNMENT NO. 1

Look at three or four different business cards. Ask a parent or guardian if they have any business cards in their wallet or in the house if you do not have any. Compare each card and explain what you liked or what could be improved for each card in the following areas:

1. Layout
2. Design (graphic is needed)
3. Color
4. Typography

ASSIGNMENT NO. 2

Create a flyer using your computer and a word processing program for a garage sale. Print it out and submit it when you come back to school. Think about the following information that should be placed on the flyer:

1. Information
2. Layout
3. Design
4. Color
5. Typography

ASSIGNMENT NO. 3

Create your own Fax sheet. Make sure you provide all the information that needs to be on a fax sheet. You can use the word processing Fax wizard, but make font changes and add color and a graphic.

ASSIGNMENT NO. 4

Look in the yellow pages of a phone book or in the classified section of a newspaper. Critique each advertisement by explaining what they did well or what could be improved for each area of Layout, Design, Color, and Typography.

ASSIGNMENT NO. 5

Create a business card for a bank manager. You can select the name of the bank. Please include the following information:

Name of Bank
Bank Address
Name of the manager
Phone and Fax numbers
Logo and slogan

ASSIGNMENT NO. 6

Create an advertisement for a phone book for a landscaping or florist company.
Be sure you include all necessary information and a graphic.


ASSIGNMENT NO. 7

Create a rough draft for a tri-fold brochure about family vacations.
Use an 8½ by 11 paper (landscape) and fold it into three panels. Create a cover and a mailer. The other panels should be about family vacations. Include pictures and text about three or four destinations.

You are to create a flyer for the grand opening of a health food store.
Use the following information:
Name of store (you create the name)
Address
Date of Grand Opening
Days and the time the store opens and closes
Come up with a catchy slogan
Have a clipart or picture
Use a different color for the font heading
Use a picture for the bullets
There will be prizes for the first 100 customers!

ASSIGNMENT NO. 2

Use the Internet to research one of the following computer operations: input, output, storage, or communications. Then prepare a brief research paper (400-500) words using the MLA format that discusses how the computer operation works and/or the type of devices used for that activity. Include at least one explanatory note and two references.

ASSIGNMENT NO. 3

Create your own Fax sheet. Make sure you provide all the information that needs to be on a fax sheet. You can use the word processing Fax wizard, but make font changes and add color and a graphic.

ASSIGNMENT NO. 4

You are to go on the Internet and find at least ten tips on how to write a winning resume. Write me a memo on your findings. The memo must consist of at least four paragraphs with four or more sentences in each paragraph.

ASSIGNMENT NO. 5

You are to go on the Internet and find at least two sample cover letters in the career that you are interested in pursing. Look at each letter and explain in a memo to me what you liked the best and what could be improved for each one.

ASSIGNMENT NO. 6

Using assignment No. 4 & 5, create a resume and a cover letter for a career you want to improve.


ASSIGNMENT NO. 7

Using a spreadsheet application like Excel, create a document showing four stocks. Include the following information:

1. Name of company
2. Ticker symbol
3. 52-week High
4. 52-week Low
5. Current selling price

Use the max, min, and average formulas for the 52-week high and 52-week low.

Students will learn the importance of a career and financial planning and learn how to manage their money wisely and make good financial decisions that will affect a healthy future.
