IB History of the Americas
History is more than the study of the past. It is the process of recording, reconstructing and interpreting the past through the investigation of a variety of sources. It is a discipline that gives people an understanding of themselves and others in relation to the world, both past and present. Students of history should learn how the discipline works. It is an exploratory subject that poses questions without providing definitive answers. In order to understand the past, students must engage with it both through exposure to primary historical sources and through the work of historians. Historical study involves both selection and interpretation of data and critical evaluation of it. Students of history should appreciate the relative nature of historical knowledge and understanding, as each generation reflects its own world and preoccupations and as more evidence emerges. A study of history both requires and develops an individual’s understanding of, and empathy for, people living in other periods and contexts.
History of the Americas is a two year course. During year one of the course students will focus three topics: U.S. Civil War, Civil Rights and Social Movements in the Americas, and Into the 21st Century from the 1980s to 2000. During year two of the course students will focus on two prescribed subjects: Communism in Crisis, 1976-1989 and The Cold War. When doing writing in IB HoA course, please refer to and use the MLA format. This includes the Internal Assessment we will do during trimester II.
The Big IA (Internal Assessment)
The internal assessment is an integral part of the course. It enables students to demonstrate the application of their skills and knowledge, and to pursue their personal interests, without the time limitations and other constraints that are often associated with written examinations. The internal assessment will be worth 30% of your trimester grade.
ENJOY THE JOURNEY!!
Turbulence & Turmoil
The goal of social studies is to develop well informed young people who hold democratic values, are prepared to participate in the life of their community and country, and who accept responsibility for human actions and conditions. We seek to build knowledge and skills in students that will foster constructive engagement in civic and social processes.
Turbulence & Turmoil is a thematic study of 20th Century America through its "Giants". Who or what were the major forces in the development of modern day American culture? We will study "giants" who were leaders & revolutionaries, artists & entertainers, heroes & icons, scientists & thinkers, builders & titans. We will take an in-depth look at these GIANTS and their influence on the development of our nation's culture.
Magical History Tour
Do you love history? Do you like to travel? If you answered YES to both of these questions, the Magical History Tour is for you! Magical History Tour has been to both sides of the country, including cities such as Washington DC, Boston, New York, Myrtle Beach & San Francisco!

PHS social studies teachers lead student groups to see, hear, smell, taste and feel the culture of a variety of cities for as many hours in a day as we can accomplish! This might include historical adventures, trips to museums, top-notch shopping, sporting interests, ethnic neighborhoods, architecture and a lot of other historical and cultural activities. Please see information below listed under downloads for information regarding the October 2012 adventure! You can contact either myself or Mr. J Schwartz if you have any questions! WE WOULD LIKE ALL INTERESTED STUDENTS TO TURN IN MATERIALS & DOWN PAYMENTS BY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2012! All downpayments and other payments in check form should be made out to Park High School Magical History Tour. We look forward to sharing the adventure with you!! |
