Language Arts
Using the language of the discipline plot terms, Students are analyzing class novels and their pleasure readers for conflict, rising action events, climax, falling action events and resolution.
Vocabulary from the novel is studied, and students will write their own sentences about the novel using the vocabulary words in the first Usage Test.
Text based skills focused this nine weeks are main ideas, details, summarization, inference, and context clues.
The 6+1 Traits of Writing will be used for the students' standards of writing. The rubric will be taught and used for self assessment as well as teacher assessment.
Social Studies
Students have just finished creating annotated timelines of the causes and effects of the American Revolution.
The second semester will be an ongoing study of U.S. History after the American Revolution. How did our nation pick up the pieces of our country and form a working government?
*Note taking skills will be a focus using nonfiction text throughout this year in social studies.
Spring Semester Independent Studies:
*Students will soon begin on their family history story projects. Family interviews, online sites, and visuals will enhance each student's genealogy report.
*Student groups will create public service announcement films to share messages to their targeted groups. Character education messages will help in community building.
*Invention Convention will be a research and creative project for students to problem solve by creating their own invention idea. Small scale models and diagrams will be presented during the convention. Inventors will speak to visitors at the convention about their ideas.
