This senior elective English course focuses on the entire writing process of prewriting, drafting, proofreading and revision. A goal of the course is for students to perfect and take ownership of their writing and realize the importance of good writing as a life-long skill. To improve their writings, students will examine diction, sentence construction, paragraph development, grammar, mechanics and writing style. Students will compose a variety of essays including narration, explaining by examples and process, comparing and contrasting, dividing and classifying, establishing cause and effect, defining and persuading.

English 11 is a year-long required course which examines various literary genres (including drama, poetry, novel, short story, etc.) from primarily American authors. In addition, students have the opportunity to respond to literature using written and verbal forms. Students will review the eight parts of speech, phrases and clauses and will learn proper use of pronouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Revision and editing, the last two steps of the writing process, are emphasized.

Honors English 11 is an accelerated survey course of representative American authors and literary genres. Various literary genres including nonfiction, novel, essay, short story, poetry, and drama will be studied. Students will develop their writing skills in expository essays, analyzing characterization, setting, theme, symbolism, etc. In addition to material covered in English 11, honors students will be assigned additional readings and written work.

This is a senior elective English course which consists of the basics of public speaking. Students will learn how to select a speech topic, gather information, organize ideas and use supporting evidence. A variety of speeches, including a speech to inform, a speech to persuade, a speech to entertain, a speech for a special occasion, etc., will give students an opportunity to analyze themselves as speakers and to adapt their speaking styles and content for various audiences.
