Week 2 first grade art classes learned about Claude Monet and studied his paintings of waterlilies. A pop-up book of Monet's house and garden was displayed in the room, along with many prints of Monet's works of art. Students painted impressions of waterlilies in a pond.

Students in two second grade art classes worked cooperatively in groups of two or more to construct and design small chair sculptures by recycling cardboard tubes and boxes.

Week 1 first grade learned about the artist Claude Monet. Monet's "Field of Poppies" was used as inspiration for students to paint an impressionistic landscape of daisies in a field. Students mixed tints & shades of green to create a beautiful field.

Twenty second grade art classes drew and painted works of art based on their study of three of Earth's Biomes and Space. Some classes worked on a Desert Biome(the Sahara or USA/Mexico deserts), some on the Rainforest Biome(Central and South America Rainforests), others worked on the Ocean Biome(the top two layers of the ocean--Sunlit & Twilight), and other 2nd grade classes worked on Space. Each biome features many of the plants and animals that live in that region. This project was integrated and incorporated into the regular curriculum/courses of study by many classroom and special area teachers from both AES and APS (1st-4th grades). Students, teachers, and parents participate in a study of ancient Egypt. A "King Tut Museum" is created to showcase student artwork and items resembling what was discovered in King Tut's tomb.

The digital camera becomes a creative tool for capturing expressive faces. First grade students study portraits/self-portraits and learn about the famous French artist-Henri Matisse as part of this unit. During the lesson, students discover that they can use their eyes, eyebrows, lips, nose, and hands to create some wonderful "looks!"

Several second grade art classes studied the art of Austrian artist-Gustav Klimt. He was an expressionist artist and member of an art movement called "Art Nouveau" or "new art." Klimt created some very expressionists pieces of art using pattern and line. After studying his work called "BABY," students drew a self-portrait and painted a quilt design with varying motifs.

Several first grade art classes learn about the Russian artist Marc Chagall and enjoy discussing two of his paintings--"I and the Village" and "Paris through the Window." First grade art in this lesson reflects students' study of his work. Work on Shape Creatures follows with first graders manipulating paper to create an imaginary creature.

Several Albertville Primary School first and second graders won ribbons for their artwork in the 2009 INSPIRE Art Contest sponsored by Marshall Medical Centers. This contest was open to schools in the southern service area of the hospital. The students' winning art will hang in the Marshall Medical Center South Women's Lobby for an entire year! Marshall Medical South hosted a reception for the students and their guests in April.

Second grade students learned about Expressionists artists Edvard Munch & Jean-Michel Basquiat. Students drew a self-portrait or portrait of a family member displaying an emotion. A monoprint was created from their drawing. The whole process of printing was exciting for the students!

The Mountain Valley Arts Council held a reception for 46 first and second grade Albertville Elementary School students on April 3. These students had their artwork on display for several weeks with the reception concluding the event. Many students, parents, family, and friends attended.

Second grade students design decorative works of art using numbers as the subject. Students learn about the art of Robert Indiana, Charles Demuth, and Jasper Johns in this lesson. Discussions also focus on the POP ART era.

First grade art students learned about the Dutch artist-Mondrian. We looked closely at his non-objective works. Students discussed two of his bright paintings--"Broadway Boogie Woogie" and "Victory Boogie Woogie." We compared and contrasted these works and then students began to make their own creations inspired by Mondrian. We listened to Jazz music as we worked and "moved" to the beat!

Second grade art students learned about American artist--Georgia O'Keeffe and examined her close-up paintings of poppies. Afterwards, students painted their own close-up of a poppy using warm color paints.

Students and teachers participate in a school-wide visual arts study of coral reefs & tropical fish and unite in an effort to help save coral reefs in the Gulf of Panama by collecting "Quarters for Corals."

Several second grade art classes have fun learning about color and color mixing as they paint candle crates in a recycling project. The abstract artwork of Kandinsky is explored during these lessons. His painting called "Concentric Circles" is the inspiration for this art project!

Second graders paint "cats" (Rosina-style) after learning about the art of Austrian artist Rosina Wachtmeister. Her paintings are delightful, happy, and colorful. Students make comparisons of her work with Picasso's abstract faces.

Second graders learn about Wilson Bentley--famous for his study of snowflakes. Then, radial symmetry, line, shape, and color are utilized by students to create their own designer snowflakes!

First grade students did contour drawings of pumpkins from a still life set-up in the room and then painted them. Many students worked to mix oranges, greens, and violets from the primary colors of tempera. Others used watercolors to paint their pumpkins. Students learned about french artitst Paul Cezanne who was most famous for his still life works of art. They also viewed work by contemporary artist-- Peggy Flora. Discussions on these artists works centered on rhythm, form, space, shape, positive and negative space, and color.

Students, teachers, staff, parents, and visitors from the community and other areas of the state tour Tunnel Visions. Over 2,300 guests toured the 10 week exhibit to see artwork created by students which reflected their study of Art through the Ages. Parent tour guides led visitors through the Prehistoric Period, Ancient Egyptian Period, Byzantine Period, Medieval Period, Renaissance Period, Early American Period, and Modern Art Period. Outside the tunnel, students enjoyed using chalk to draw on the "Create Your Own Art" wall. Over 500 hours given by volunteers, our students, faculty, community support,and the Fine Arts Grant Award from the National Education Association helped to make this dream a reality!

Family, parents, faculty, and staff work to build Tunnel Visions. The structure is 74 ft. long, 6 ft. wide, and 7 ft. tall. The construction project takes over three weeks to complete.

Second grade artists explore the weaving of the Navajo Indians and learn about the weaving of the people of Ghana, West Africa. Then they create their own weaving. Storyteller figures are designed after learning about Pueblo artist Helen Cordero and her storyteller figures.

First grade students create "wild thing" masks in art class after listening to a story by Maurice Sendak called, "Where The Wild Things Are." A play about the story is performed by Mrs. Wright's first grade class for the student body. All first grade students in the audience wore their decorative masks and interacted with the stage performers as the story was read.

Several first and second grade art students from Albertville Primary won ribbons for their artwork at the Mountain Valley Arts Council Fine Arts Competition and Exhibit. This county-wide show included both private art students, homeschool, and public school students.
